Investigation of Fire Weather Danger under a Changing Climate at High Resolution in Greece

Nadia Politi et al.

Summary: Future fire weather conditions in Greece were studied using the Fire Weather Index (FWI), Initial Spread Index (ISI), and threshold-specific indicators. The FWI is expected to significantly increase, particularly in the southern parts, with extreme values above 100. The number of days with an FWI above the 90th percentile is projected to increase, exceeding 30 days, under both scenarios. Eastern and northern mainland regions are estimated to have an increase of over 70 days under RCP4.5 in the near future (2025-2049). Moreover, central and north-eastern parts of the country will experience 30 or more consecutive days of prolonged fire weather under RCP4.5 in the near future and under RCP8.5 in the far future (2075-2099). The expected rate of fire spread is more extensive across the country, particularly from the south to the north, compared to historical conditions.

Evidence of the variation in the rate of change of temperature and precipitation

Pablo Antunez

Summary: This study investigated the spatial variations of temperature and precipitation variables with higher sensitivity to changes in elevation above sea level, considering the effects of latitude and solar radiation. The results showed that the rate of change of these variables varied at different latitudinal and altitudinal gradients.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of forest insect populations under climate change

Derek M. Johnson et al.

Summary: The effects of climate on forest insect populations are complex, multifacted, and involve opposing, nonlinear, and nonadditive drivers. Climate change overall is leading to an increase in outbreaks and range shifts of forest insects. The links between climate and forest insect dynamics are becoming clearer, but the underlying mechanisms are still not well understood. Climate directly affects forest insect populations through their life history, physiology, and voltinism, and indirectly through its effects on host trees and natural enemies. The effects of climate on bark beetles, wood-boring insects, and sap-suckers are often indirect, through their impacts on host tree susceptibility, while the effects on defoliators are more direct. Process-based approaches, global distribution mapping, and population models are recommended to identify the underlying mechanisms and enable effective forest insect management.

Brief Overview of Greek Fir Radial Growth in Response to Climate and European Fir Budworm: Three Case Studies from Giona Mountain, Central Greece

Panagiotis P. Koulelis et al.

Summary: Tree rings from Greek fir were studied to understand their response to climate changes. Extreme droughts and wet events were found to affect fir growth negatively or positively. Precipitation in April had a positive effect on growth in all stands, as did temperature during the growing season. Evapotranspiration was inversely correlated with fir growth. A decline in tree ring growth, especially in recent years, suggests a negative impact of temperature on fir growth. More research is needed to ensure effective forest management in the future.

Temporal Variations in Temperature and Moisture Soil Profiles in a Mediterranean Maquis Forest in Greece

Athanassios Bourletsikas et al.

Summary: In this study, the inter- and intra-annual changes in soil moisture and temperature profiles were investigated in a mixed Mediterranean maquis forest. The results showed that air temperature significantly influenced the upper soil layer, with an increase in winter and decrease in summer. Precipitation was identified as the main factor driving soil moisture variations up to a depth of 40 cm.

Innovative Action for Forest Fire Prevention in Kythira Island, Greece, through Mobilization and Cooperation of the Population: Methodology and Challenges

Gavriil Xanthopoulos et al.

Summary: This paper describes a project in Kythira, Greece aimed at improving fire prevention through mobilization and cooperation of the population. The project involved analyzing fire statistics, creating a forest fuels map, and developing prevention plans for selected settlements. The project also focused on educating locals and mobilizing them to participate in fuel management and forest rehabilitation work.

Summary: This study examines the temperature and precipitation changes in Southwest Asia using the ERA5 and CRU datasets. The results show significant warming trends in the region, with notable differences between seasons and regions. In terms of precipitation, some areas experience significant decreases in winter while others see significant increases in spring.

Future climate change impact on wildfire danger over the Mediterranean: the case of Greece

Anastasios Rovithakis et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that temperature and precipitation in the Mediterranean are expected to change, contributing to longer and more intense summer droughts and likely increasing the frequency and intensity of forest fires. The assessment of future fire danger conditions in different regions of Greece using the Canadian fire weather index (FWI) reveals that fire danger is expected to progressively increase, especially in the high-end climate change scenario.

Preliminary results of European budworm Choristoneura murinana (Hubner) impact on Greek fir radial growth at Mts Parnassus and Giona

Panos Petrakis et al.

Summary: During the spring of 2020, the presence of European Fir Budworm (EFB) was recorded on Abies cephalonica trees near the villages of Kaloskopi and Agoriani in Central Greece. This is the first description of this particular pest in these specific mountain regions. The study found that EFB prefers sunny areas and/or areas near country roads where Abies cephalonica and Ittniperus oxycedrous grow. Severe infestations of scale 2, 3, and 5 were observed in the study area, with adult fir trees being the most affected. Local people have also noticed defoliations and outbreaks caused by EFB in the past. Laboratory measurements and trendline analysis suggest a decline in growth associated with EFB-induced defoliations.

No treeline shift despite climate change over the last 70 years

Mirela Beloiu et al.

Summary: This study examined the dynamic of treelines on the Mediterranean island of Crete from 1945 to 2015. Although there was no shift in the treeline over the past 70 years, the increased temperature has started to affect the optimal altitude of the treeline. The treeline elevation was found to be strongly correlated with topographic exposure to wind.

Summary: This study examines the impact of different PET methods on the aridity index AI, showing that the PET method significantly affects climate classification and requires adjustments of aridity class threshold values based on the method used. New threshold values for aridity classes are proposed in this work for sites in the Greek peninsula.
