The impacts of urban anthropogenic heat and surface albedo change on boundary layer meteorology and air pollutants in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region

Ruiting Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the present and future anthropogenic heat flux and surface albedo in Beijing are estimated and incorporated into the WRF-Chem/UCM model. The model simulations show that the changes in surface characteristics have a significant impact on urban meteorology and air pollutants in Beijing. The increase in surface albedo and decrease in anthropogenic heat lead to decreases in air temperature, wind speed, planetary boundary layer height, and ozone concentration, while increasing the near surface particulate matter concentration.

Estimation of anthropogenic heat from buildings based on various data sources in Singapore

Wenhui He et al.

Summary: This paper presents a solution to estimate the anthropogenic heat from buildings in Singapore by using a random forest classification model based on multiple data sources. The results show that the annual average anthropogenic heat from different types of buildings in Singapore ranges from 1.1 to 12.1 W m-2. This approach can help integrate data from different sources and benefit urban planning and climate modeling. Overall, the paper is rated 8 out of 10 in importance.

Role of local climate zones and urban ventilation in canopy urban heat island-heatwave interaction in Nanjing megacity, China

Weishou Tian et al.

Summary: This study quantifies and explains the spatial and temporal variations of canopy urban heat island intensity (CUHII) in the megacity of Nanjing, China. It also examines the association between CUHII and heat waves (HWs) and identifies the potential drivers. The results show a significant diurnal variation in CUHII, with a valley during the day and a peak at night. CUHII is stronger during HW periods, especially during the day, which contributes to higher HW intensity. The interannual variability of CUHII is mainly influenced by anthropogenic heat emissions and air pollution, while the spatial patterns are shaped by local climate zones and urban ventilation.

Do Electric Vehicles Mitigate Urban Heat? The Case of a Tropical City

Gianluca Mussetti et al.

Summary: Electric vehicles have the potential to mitigate excessive heat in urban areas by reducing exhaust heat emissions, resulting in a decrease in near-surface air temperature. In the tropical city of Singapore, a full replacement of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles with electric vehicles can reduce the near-surface air temperature by up to 0.6 degrees Celsius. The heat mitigation potential is highest during the morning traffic peak and in areas with the highest traffic density.

Impact of anthropogenic heat from air-conditioning on air temperature of naturally ventilated apartments at high-density tropical cities

Chao Yuan et al.

Summary: Natural ventilation is an important resource for lowering indoor temperatures in sub/tropical areas. However, the anthropogenic heat from mechanical cooling systems in high-density urban contexts can have a significant impact on naturally ventilated indoor spaces. This study focuses on residential neighborhoods and aims to develop evidence-based strategies to improve residential building design and mitigate the negative effects of anthropogenic heat. A parametric study using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models was conducted to investigate the impact of various design parameters on indoor air temperature increment.

Exploring the impacts of heat release of vehicles on urban heat mitigation in Sendai, Japan using WRF model integrated with urban LCZ

Xilin Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of vehicle heat (VH) on urban climate in Japanese cities using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) numerical modeling system. By integrating VH and specific urban canopy parameters (UCPs) into the model, the study establishes a climate model and validates it with observed data. The study finds that eliminating vehicle heat contributes to urban heat mitigation, particularly in compact areas of the city center.

Summary: This study examines the impact of polycentric urban structure on carbon dioxide emissions in China, finding a U-shaped relationship between polycentric structure and carbon dioxide emissions, as well as a substitution relationship between polycentric structure and market integration. Additionally, urban distance and transportation infrastructure within provinces have significant nonlinear moderating effects on this relationship.

Interaction between heat wave and urban heat island: A case study in a tropical coastal city, Singapore

Lup Wai Chew et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interaction between heat waves and urban heat island effects in a tropical city by studying the heat wave event in Singapore in April 2016. The results showed that there was no significant amplification of urban heat island intensity during the heat wave period, indicating the absence of a synergistic effect between heat waves and urban heat island effects in the tropical city. This suggests that the interaction between heat waves and urban heat island effects may differ in tropical cities compared to cities in temperate climate zones.

Summary: The impact of heat on human health, particularly in urban areas, is significant. Urban heat stress intensity is affected by various factors such as urban heat island, urban-induced change in moisture, and background temperature. Research shows that diurnal variations in heat stress intensity are mainly influenced by urban heat island dynamics, with nighttime discomfort exacerbated by intensified urban-induced effects.

Summary: This study identifies the reduced efficiency of the pathway from anthropogenic heat (AH) to sensible heat flux near high-rise buildings as a primary contributor to the underestimation of AH in urban centers. It highlights the importance of heat storage in AH quantification using remote sensing data and provides evidence for potentially correcting the bias in AH with improved heat storage modeling.
