A comprehensive resilience assessment of Mexican tree species and their relationship with drought events over the last century

A. Correa-Diaz et al.

Summary: This study used a tree-ring database to evaluate the overall resilience of tree species to drought events in the last century. It found that pointer years occurred during 11.3% of the 20th century, with an average decrease in tree growth of 66%. Different tree species showed varying levels of resilience and recovery rates, with species inhabiting xeric conditions showing higher recovery rates. On average, tree species needed 2.7 years to recover from drought events, with extreme cases requiring more than a decade.

Dendroclimatic reconstruction of precipitation and temperature for the Mayo River basin in northwestern Mexico

Aldo Rafael Martinez-Sifuentes et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers successfully reconstructed precipitation and temperature climate in the Mayo river basin in Northern Mexico using conifer tree rings and spatial climate information. They analyzed the high and low-frequency variability of climate in the region and found a significant decrease in precipitation and increase in temperature for the last 270 years. The reconstructed climate data were also associated with the El Nino Southern Oscillation phenomenon and Standardized Evapotranspiration-Precipitation Index.

Historic Variability of the Water Inflow to the Lazaro Cardenas Dam and Water Allocation in the Irrigation District 017, Comarca Lagunera, Mexico

Jose Villanueva-Diaz et al.

Summary: An assemblage of tree-ring chronologies for the Nazas in Mexico was used to determine water inflow at the Lazaro Cardenas Dam. The study found that the El Nino Southern Oscillation and the North American Monsoon System were the most influential factors on water yield. The reconstructed inflow also revealed prolonged drought episodes lasting over 10 years.

Two Centuries of Drought History in the Center of Chihuahua, Mexico

Aldo Rafael Martinez-Sifuentes et al.

Summary: This research reconstructed droughts in the center of Chihuahua, Mexico using the SPEI from tree rings, and identified the influence of ocean-atmospheric phenomena on the reconstructed drought index. The study found significant correlations between precipitation and temperature with the earlywood band, and identified seven extreme drought events from 1775 to 2017.

Comparison of Missing Data Infilling Mechanisms for Recovering a Real-World Single Station Streamflow Observation

Thelma Dede Baddoo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the required complexity of missing data reconstruction schemes for a real-world streamflow observation, comparing univariate algorithms with multiple imputation methods. Univariate algorithms created for time series were found to yield satisfactory results, while multiple imputation methods considering data characteristics performed similarly or better without added time and computational requirements.

Drought Relief and Reversal over North America from 1500 to 2016

M. C. A. Torbenson et al.

Summary: The season-to-season persistence of soil moisture drought varies across North America, with some skill in forecasting future conditions. The North American Seasonal Precipitation Atlas (NASPA) offers new insights on intra-annual changes in drought over up to 2000 years. The reconstructions show patterns of drought amelioration and termination, with rare subcontinental-to-continental-scale reversals in the following warm season.
