Mechanical and Dynamic Mechanical Behavior of the Lignocellulosic Pine Needle Fiber-Reinforced SEBS Composites

Dinesh et al.

Summary: In this study, lignocellulosic pine needle fibers (PNFs) were used as a reinforcement in the thermoplastic elastomer styrene ethylene butylene styrene (SEBS) matrix to create environmentally friendly and economical PNF/SEBS composites. The addition of a maleic anhydride-grafted SEBS compatibilizer resulted in strong chemical bonds forming between the PNF, compatibilizer, and SEBS polymer, leading to enhanced interfacial adhesion in the composites. The prepared composites exhibited higher mechanical properties, as well as better dynamic mechanical behavior, indicating their potential for engineering applications.

Multilayer graphene-based radiation modulator for adaptive infrared camouflage with thermal management

Pei Ding et al.

Summary: Graphene film has the potential to be used for thermal camouflage and thermal management due to its structural characteristics and controllable electromagnetic radiation modulation properties. This study investigates a thermal radiation modulator (TRM) based on multilayer graphene (MLG) and reveals the physical mechanism underlying the spectral characteristics and sensitivity of infrared (IR) radiation modulation to the number of graphene layers. Furthermore, a design scheme integrating a TRM and a meta-absorber is proposed to solve the problem of thermal instability in MLG-based TRM.

Acid-Assisted Ball Mill Synthesis of Carboxyl-Functional-Group-Modified Prussian Blue as Sodium-Ion Battery Cathode

Yu Luo et al.

Summary: Prussian blue is a promising candidate for sodium-ion battery cathodes due to its open frameworks and high working potential. However, its interstitial water content and poor electronic conductivity limit its performance. In this study, acid-assisted ball milling synthesis was used to produce surface-modified Prussian blue with lower interstitial water content and enhanced electrochemical cycling performance. The as-prepared Prussian blue showed high specific capacity and good cycling stability in sodium-ion batteries. A solid-state sodium-ion battery with Prussian blue as the cathode also demonstrated high specific capacity. This study provides an effective solution for improving the performance of Prussian blue for commercial applications.

Phenotypic matching by spot pattern potentially mediates female giraffe social associations

K. Morandi et al.

Summary: The coat spot pattern of Masai giraffes is highly variable and shows some heritability. Adult female giraffes have stronger associations with other females that have similar spot pattern traits, particularly in terms of spot shape. This suggests that spot patterns may serve as visual cues for intraspecific communication and kin or individual recognition in fission-fusion species.

Summary: This study attempted to achieve Ag and Ti hyperdoping in Si using ion implantation and nanosecond pulsed-laser melting, but found that high concentrations of opto-electrically active Ag or Ti necessary to form an impurity band were not achieved. Additionally, there was no preferential lattice location for Ag or Ti found in the material. As a result, Au remains the only viable impurity to date for achieving the required level of hyperdoping in Si.
