Parallel triplet formation pathways in a singlet fission material

Nilabja Maity et al.

Summary: Utilizing organic singlet fission materials to harvest long-lived free triplets can potentially increase photovoltaic efficiencies. In this study, we demonstrate the formation of spin-0 correlated triplet pairs (1)(TT) through photoexcitation in supramolecular aggregate thin films. We also observe the production of long-lived triplets through classical intersystem crossing, with the competition between two pathways. Additionally, we find that the intermolecular coupling geometry has a significant impact on singlet fission dynamics.

Singlet fission photovoltaics: Progress and promising pathways

Alexander J. Baldacchino et al.

Summary: Singlet fission is a process in which a high-energy singlet exciton separates into two lower energy triplet excitons, with high quantum efficiency and potential for reducing energy losses in photovoltaic cells. Efforts have been made in the past decade to incorporate singlet fission into solar cells, comparing and categorizing various device structures to identify promising avenues for future research and development.

Emissive spin-0 triplet-pairs are a direct product of triplet-triplet annihilation in pentacene single crystals and anthradithiophene films

David G. Bossanyi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that distinct (1)(TT) emission directly arises from triplet-triplet annihilation in high-quality pentacene single crystals and anthradithiophene thin films, confirming the presence of a real, emissive triplet-pair state as an intermediate in both singlet fission and triplet-triplet annihilation processes.

Efficient Free Triplet Generation Follows Singlet Fission in Diketopyrrolopyrrole Polymorphs with Goldilocks Coupling

Andrew M. Levine et al.

Summary: Microcrystal electron diffraction, grazing incidence wide-angle scattering, and UV-vis spectroscopy were used to analyze the unit-cell structure and relative composition of dimethylated diketopyrrolopyrrole H- and J-polymorphs within thin films subjected to vapor solvent annealing. It was found that vapor solvent annealing can promote the conversion from H to J polymorphs, with J-polymorph films exhibiting higher free triplet yields compared to mixed films. The study also revealed that coupling in J-aggregates is lower, making triplet decoupling more favorable in J-polymorph films.

Realistic Efficiency Limits for Singlet-Fission Silicon Solar Cells

Benjamin Daiber et al.

Summary: Singlet fission is a carrier multiplication mechanism that can significantly increase the efficiency of silicon solar cells. The efficiency potential of singlet fission implementations in silicon solar cells varies depending on the transfer mechanism and singlet energy level. It is shown that the efficiency gain from singlet fission is greater for more efficient silicon base cells, unlike tandem perovskite-silicon solar cells.

Unconventional singlet fission materials

Tobias Ullrich et al.

Summary: Singlet fission is a photophysical downconversion pathway that transforms a singlet excitation into two triplet excited states, offering potential applications in solar energy conversion devices and other areas. While the mechanistic understanding of SF has evolved rapidly, the limited number of suitable SF-chromophores poses a challenge, necessitating the search for new SF materials.

Tuning phenoxyl-substituted diketopyrrolopyrroles from quinoidal to biradical ground states through (hetero-)aromatic linkers

Rodger Rausch et al.

Summary: The research identified the importance of the aromaticity of the conjugated (hetero-)aromatic bridge in modulating the electronic character of the compounds, enabling a spin crossover from closed shell quinones to open shell biradical. This transition was confirmed through optical, magnetic, and computational studies.
