Programmable Jigsaw Puzzles of Soft Materials Enabled by Pixelated Holographic Surface Reliefs

Yifei Wang et al.

Summary: Manual intervention in self-organizing soft matter to achieve desired structures is a complex and important project. This study presents a simple method for programming optical jigsaw puzzles using pixelated holographic surface reliefs, enabling the manufacturing of programmable soft materials with tailored functions. The multiscale jigsaw puzzles exhibit unprecedented stability and durability, providing a prospective framework for customized adaptive photonic architectures. This work demonstrates a reliable and efficient approach for assembling soft matter, unlocking the full potential of stimuli-responsive systems, and inspiring advancements in soft photonics and related fields.

High-contrast fluorescence modulation driven by intramolecular photocyclization and protonation of bithienylpyridine functionalized α-cyanostilbene

Tao Ma et al.

Summary: Reported here is a light-inducible fluorescence conversion and acidochromism based on the bithienylpyridine functionalized alpha-cyanostilbene luminogen (E-CTP). The AIEE property and 365 nm light-induced fluorescence conversion of E-CTP were characterized by high contrast in color (Delta lambda em = 85 nm) and strong intensity. The fluorescence conversion in this molecular system is driven by intra-molecular photocyclization rather than the commonly occurred intermolecular photodimerization for the alpha-cyanostilbene system.

Photo-triggered full-color circularly polarized luminescence based on photonic capsules for multilevel information encryption

Siyang Lin et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the development of device-friendly solid films with color tunability by utilizing Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) platforms consisting of chiral donors and achiral molecular switches in liquid crystal photonic capsules (LCPCs). These LCPCs exhibit photoswitchable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from blue emission to RGB trichromatic signals under UV irradiation, showing strong time dependence due to different FRET efficiencies at each time node. Based on these properties, the concept of multilevel data encryption using LCPC films is demonstrated.

Reversible Handedness Inversion and Circularly Polarized Light Reflection Tuning in Self-Organized Helical Superstructures Using Visible-Light-Driven Macrocyclic Chiral Switches

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: A series of macrocyclic azobenzene-based chiral photoswitches have been designed, synthesized, and characterized. The photoswitches, when doped in achiral liquid crystals, exhibit enhanced helical twisting power and form self-organized helical superstructures called cholesteric liquid crystals. Reversible photoisomerization can be achieved by visible light, and the photoswitches with shorter substituents enable handedness inversion of the liquid crystals. This is the first example of ortho-linked azobenzene-based photoswitches that enable handedness inversion in cholesteric liquid crystals.

Preparation, property manipulation and application of α-cyanostilbene-containing photoresponsive liquid crystal elastomers with different alkoxy tail length

Zui Liu et al.

Summary: This study reported physically cross-linked photoresponsive liquid crystal elastomers with different alkoxy tail lengths and investigated their phase structure, photo-induced deformation property, and application. The results showed that the glass transition temperature decreased with increasing alkoxy tail length, while the clearing point temperature generally increased. Furthermore, the uniaxially oriented fibers exhibited large bending angles and fast photoresponse speed under UV light, with the bending angle decreasing with longer alkoxy tail length.
