Oxygenated copper vanadium selenide composite nanostructures as a cathode material for zinc-ion batteries with high stability up to 10 000 cycles

D. Narsimulu et al.

Summary: Researchers reported a new composite material, O-CuVSe, as the cathode material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZiBs). The O-CuVSe composite cathode exhibited high specific capacity and excellent cycling stability in a wide potential window. The superior electrochemical properties were attributed to the oxygen vacancy engineering and interlayer doping of Cu ions, which enhanced the structural stability and electron/ion transport kinetics. This study presents a new opportunity for the development of high-voltage and high-capacity cathode materials for AZiBs and other energy storage devices.

When It's Heavier: Interfacial and Solvation Chemistry of Isotopes in Aqueous Electrolytes for Zn-ion Batteries

Xuan Gao et al.

Summary: The use of the isotope electrochemical effect (EEI) of water in Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) electrolyte addresses the challenges of side reactions and gas production. The low diffusion and strong coordination of ions in D2O reduce the possibility of side reactions, resulting in a broader potential window, less pH change, and less zinc hydroxide sulfate (ZHS) generation during cycling. D2O also eliminates different ZHS phases caused by changes in bound water, leading to a stable electrode-electrolyte interface. Full cells with D2O-based electrolyte demonstrate stable cycling performance with high reversible efficiencies and wide voltage windows.

Reversible Zn Metal Anodes Enabled by Trace Amounts of Underpotential Deposition Initiators

Yuhang Dai et al.

Summary: Routine electrolyte additives are not effective enough for uniform zinc (Zn) deposition. Based on underpotential deposition (UPD), an escort effect of electrolyte additives for uniform Zn deposition at the atomic level is proposed. With nickel ion (Ni2+) additives, metallic Ni deposits preferentially and triggers the UPD of Zn on Ni, facilitating firm nucleation and uniform growth of Zn while suppressing side reactions. The optimized cell operates for over 900 h at 1 mA cm(-2), more than 4 times longer than the blank one, indicating the significance of this work.
