Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of biomass-derived furfural into furfuryl alcohol over zirconium doped nanofiber

Wansi Lin et al.

Summary: A novel zirconium-doped poly-acrylonitrile nanofiber (Zr@PAN) was fabricated via electrospinning technology and showed high catalytic activity for the conversion of furfural (FAL) into furfuryl alcohol (FOL) through catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH). The cooperation between Lewis acid and Lewis base sites, facilitated by the chelation effect between zirconium ions and cyano-groups on PAN, was responsible for the excellent catalytic performance. A kinetic model was established to predict the reaction and achieved a good correlation between measured and predicted data, allowing for effective monitoring and optimization of reaction conditions. The introduction of bridging agents such as lignin and tea polyphenol compensated for the decreased activity of Zr-20@PAN after recovery, due to their abundant hydroxyl or carboxyl groups.

Sulfosuccinic acid-based metal-center catalysts for the synthesis of HMF from carbohydrates

Guillermo Alberto Portillo Perez et al.

Summary: 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a promising platform chemical for carbohydrate-based biorefineries, but its industrialization is hindered by substrate cost. Three novel bifunctional catalysts were developed using Cr, Zr, and Ti precursors, with sulfosuccinic acid as a ligand, and their catalytic properties in HMF synthesis were tested. Among them, Cr-SSA was the most effective with a 60% yield of HMF after 3 hours. Kinetic models suggested that glucose-to-fructose isomerization was the preferred pathway for HMF formation with Cr-SSA.

Selective transformation of carbohydrates to 5-ethoxymethylfurfural over tungstophosphoric acid supported on activated carbon derived from orange peel

P. Krishna Kumari et al.

Summary: A series of tungstophosphoric acid supported on activated carbon derived from left-over orange-peel catalysts (TPA/OAC) were used as catalysts for the one-pot catalytic transformation of fructose/glucose to 5-ethoxymethylfurfural. The physico-chemical properties of the catalysts were characterized, and spectroscopic analysis showed that TPA was well distributed on the high surface area carbon support. The yield of EMF depended on the content of TPA on support and the reaction conditions. The catalyst with 25 wt% TPA on OAC showed the highest activity for EMF synthesis from fructose.

Construction of electron-deficient zirconium sites for the efficient catalytic transfer hydrogenation of levulinic acid

Wansi Lin et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that tungstophosphoric acid (HPW) can effectively modify the electronic structure of polyacrylonitrile and lignin-supported Zr nanofiber (Zr-Lig@PAN), enhancing the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of levulinic acid (LA). By finely tuning the electronic structure of the catalyst, efficient HPW-modified Zr-based catalysts can be designed for CTH reactions.
