High-Resolution Profiling of the Functional Heterogeneity o Technical Lignins

Oliver Musl et al.

Summary: This study used preparative size-exclusion chromatography and offline characterizations to obtain highly resolved profiles of the functional heterogeneity of technical lignins. It also developed a robust calculation method for estimating the functional group contents of lignin fractions based on their molar mass distribution (MMD). This provides valuable information for the purification and separation of lignins.

A modified ionization difference UV-vis method for fast quantitation of guaiacyl-type phenolic hydroxyl groups in lignin

Lan Chen et al.

Summary: A modified Delta epsilon-spectrum method was developed for the quantitation of phenolic hydroxyl groups in lignin. By using multi-point wavelengths measurement and considering negative absorbance, the modified method provided more accurate and reliable results compared to the conventional method.

Fluorescence Microscopy Methods for the Analysis and Characterization of Lignin

Agustin Maceda et al.

Summary: Various methods for analyzing lignin autofluorescence have been developed, including fluorescence microscopy and other semi-quantitative methods, which efficiently characterize lignin. These methods can be used to analyze the transport of lignin monomers, distribution of lignin types in different plant tissues, changes in wood degradation, and purity of cellulose nanofibers in lignocellulosic biomass.

Method for Improved Fluorescence Corrections for Molar Mass Characterization by Multiangle Light Scattering

Zachariah A. Pittman et al.

Summary: In this study, we used multiangle light scattering (MALS) to determine the absolute molar mass of fluorescent macromolecules. We found that bandwidth filters alone are insufficient for blocking fluorescence in some systems. To address this issue, we developed a correction procedure to accurately determine the true molar mass by calculating the amount of fluorescence interference in the filtered signal. We successfully eliminated fluorescence interference in MALS measurements using this approach, demonstrating its potential application for characterizing macromolecules with intrinsic fluorescence.

Lignin fractionation: Effective strategy to reduce molecule weight dependent heterogeneity for upgraded lignin valorization

Tairan Pang et al.

Summary: Conventional pulping processes and emerging lignocellulosic biorefineries produce lignin with heterogeneous characteristics, which limit its downstream applications. Fractionation of lignin into homogeneous fractions can overcome this limitation and upgrade lignin valorization. The obtained lignin fractions with improved properties can be used to enhance the valorization of lignin.
