Lei Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, a multiscale fracture integrated equivalent porous medium (MFEPM) method is proposed for simulating fluid flow and solute transport in a fracture-matrix system. The MFEPM method manifests an efficient effect in the characterization of preferential flow and can represent mass interactions between the fractures and matrix. The results of the numerical case studies show that the MFEPM method has a high computational accuracy and good reliability, while maintaining an appropriate computational burden.

The effects of influence radius and drawdown cone on the areas related to the protection of water wells

Amin Ahmadi et al.

Summary: Determining a suitable protection zone around the pumping well is important for preserving the quality and quantity of water. While various definitions and methods have been developed to determine protective zones, it remains challenging to establish quantitative and qualitative protection zones. This study focused on investigating the drawdown cone and influence radius as characteristics of the influence zone, using the numerical MODFLOW model and comparing the results with analytical models. The influence radius, though a representative parameter, has limitations due to its dependence on definition.

Investigation on strong vertical permeability and micro-pore characteristics of Jinan red clay using X-ray micro-tomography

Hao Cai et al.

Summary: Due to the peculiarities of the spring domain strata in Jinan, there is serious water seepage during excavation. The macro permeability of soil is closely related to its microstructure. This study used micro-CT and a self-designed soil seepage device to observe the internal pore structure and water flow of Jinan red clay under different seepage stages. A pore network model was established to calculate and compare pore and throat size distributions and coordination number. Seepage experiments were conducted based on the 3D pore structure of red clay. The results showed that the preferential flow of red clay in Jinan is obvious due to the presence of vertically developed macropore channels. Fine particles are washed away during seepage, leading to the expansion of pore channels. The maximum pore radius and pore connectivity have a significant influence on the seepage characteristics of Jinan red clay, but the correlation with porosity is small.

Modelling infiltration and infiltration excess: The importance of fast and local processes

Axel Bronstert et al.

Summary: Physically based distributed hydrological models aim to represent hydrological processes accurately, including runoff generation. Both subsurface and surface runoff contribute significantly to total runoff. Adequately considering surface runoff in catchment models is challenging but important for flood generation. This study presents observational data and approaches to deal with these challenges, improving the accuracy and explanatory power of the model regarding surface runoff generation and soil moisture dynamics.

Summary: Accurately predicting water inflow and groundwater influence of a tunnel is important but challenging. Existing investigations usually assume linear flow, but in reality, non-Darcian flow regime is common, especially in karst regions. In this study, numerical simulations were conducted to investigate stable water inflow and influence radius under non-Darcian flow regime.

Fluid-induced vibration evolution mechanism of multiphase free sink vortex and the multi-source vibration sensing method

Lin Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel fluid-structure coupling modeling and sensing method for the vibration mechanism induced by multiphase free sink vortex (MFSV). A fluid-structure coupling mechanic model based on the Rankine vortex model and Helmholtz equation is built to determine critical penetration conditions. Then, a Flugge equation-based solving approach is proposed to obtain the vibration evolution mechanism. The results demonstrate that the proposed method has better revealed the vibration evolution mechanism and its displacement response.

Summary: In this paper, a mathematical model of the arcing of the pantograph-catenary system in urban rail based on MHD is established, and the arc temperature field of the pantograph-catenary arc is simulated using COMSOL finite element software. The relationship between the arc central temperature, duration, and gap of the pantograph arc is studied through temperature distribution cloud diagram and related images. The feasibility of the simulation model is verified by the pantograph-catenary arc experiment platform. Bartlomiej Gackiewicz et al.

Summary: The study focused on modeling saturated water flow in soil samples with and without a percolating macropore network using two different approaches. By blending the NS and NS/Darcy modeling approaches, a new hybrid model was proposed for better estimation of Ksat. The simulations revealed that macropores are favorable flow paths even if they are not directly connected, emphasizing their importance in soil water flow.

Characterizing the scaling coefficient ω between viscous and inertial permeability of fractures

Kun Xing et al.

Summary: The study focused on quantitatively analyzing flow in fractures using Forchheimer models, revealing the relationship between viscous and inertial permeability in single fractures. Results showed that the Forchheimer model fit non-linear fluid flow in various artificial single fractures, and a scaling coefficient omega could predict inertial permeability based on viscous permeability. The fluctuation range of omega was related to medium types, with vertical single fractures producing larger omega. Omega was inversely proportional to inertial effects, roughness, and aperture, providing a basis for further quantification of non-Darcy flow.

Hydraulic Properties of Forest Soils with Stagnic Conditions

Stefan Julich et al.

Summary: The study found that different tree species have a distinct impact on hydrological properties and soil pore size distribution. Older forest stands have higher transmission pores and therefore higher infiltration rates and water conductance. Oak trees showed higher hydraulic conductivities and air capacities compared to spruce, indicating a more connected macropore system. Additional measurements are needed to further understand the soil hydraulic properties of forest soils in temperate climates.
