Heavy Metal Contamination in the Aquatic Ecosystem: Toxicity and Its Remediation Using Eco-Friendly Approaches

Veer Singh et al.

Summary: Urbanization and industrialization cause environmental contamination and the presence of toxic heavy metal ions, leading to health issues. Traditional methods for heavy metal decontamination have drawbacks, necessitating the development of cost-effective and eco-friendly solutions. This review focuses on heavy metal contamination, toxicity, and the use of biological approaches for removal.

Health risk assessment of heavy metal concentration in muscle of Chelon auratus and Chelon saliens from the southern Caspian Sea

Shima Bakhshalizadeh et al.

Summary: Heavy metals are serious pollutants in aquatic ecosystems. We studied the concentrations of heavy metals in the muscle of two fish species and assessed the environmental contamination and potential health risk from fish consumption. The results showed significant variations in metal concentrations, with some exceeding the limits and posing potential health risks.

Heavy metal pollution in the aquatic environment: efficient and low-cost removal approaches to eliminate their toxicity: a review

Kosar Hikmat Hama Aziz et al.

Summary: Heavy metal contamination of water sources is a global environmental concern due to industrialization, climate change, and urbanization. This pollution threatens aquatic ecosystems and human health through toxic and bioaccumulative heavy metal ions. Efforts have been made to find cost-effective methods for wastewater treatment, such as physicochemical adsorption and advanced oxidation processes. However, practical applications may be limited by high preparation and usage costs. This review focuses on the sources, transformations, toxicological impacts, and removal techniques of heavy metal pollution.

Spatiotemporal variation and toxicity of trace metals in commercially important fish of the tidal Pasur River in Bangladesh

Mir Mohammad Ali et al.

Summary: The research found that the fish species collected from Pasur River are heavily contaminated with toxic metals, posing a significant risk to human health. The concentration of arsenic and chromium varied significantly across seasons, and all fish species had metal concentrations higher than the acceptable level. Consumption of these fish poses chronic cancer risk to the people in the study field.

Assessment of Fish Quality Based on the Content of Heavy Metals

Joanna Luczynska et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to estimate the fish quality in terms of Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn contents. The study found that crucian carp had significantly higher concentrations of zinc, copper, and iron in their muscles compared to the other fish species. Walleye pollock had a higher manganese content. However, all studied fish species posed no threat to humans in terms of these four metals. Monitoring of the aquatic environment and fish living there is necessary to prevent an increase in metal concentrations due to time-changing abiotic and biotic factors.

Copper and Zinc Levels in Commercial Marine Fish from Setiu, East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia

Chee Kong Yap et al.

Summary: This study assessed the human health risk of Cu and Zn in marine fish samples from Setiu in Terengganu, Malaysia. The results indicated that these fish are good sources of these elements and their concentrations are below the permissible limits, thus posing no potential adverse effects on consumers. Continued monitoring is necessary to ensure consumer safety.

Effects of heavy metals on fish physiology - A review

Md Shahjahan et al.

Summary: The pollution by heavy metals poses a serious threat to the aquatic environment and organisms. This review investigates the effects of heavy metals on fish physiology, including hemato-biochemical properties, immunological parameters, organ histopathology, and molecular mechanisms. These parameters are important bio-monitoring tools for assessing heavy metal toxicity.

Distribution and Bioaccumulation of Essential and Toxic Metals in Tissues of Thaila (Catla catla) from a Natural Lake, Pakistan and Its Possible Health Impact on Consumers

Muhammad Saleem et al.

Summary: Although fish are recommended as part of a healthy diet, the accumulation of heavy metals in many fish species has raised concerns about the potential health risks. This study analyzed the levels of essential and toxic metals in Catla catla fish from Mangla Lake in Pakistan and found that the concentrations of several metals exceeded international safety limits for human consumption. The study also evaluated the health risks to consumers and found that the intake of these fish could result in lifetime non-carcinogenic health risks.

Effects of Water Pollution on Human Health and Disease Heterogeneity: A Review

Li Lin et al.

Summary: Untreated discharge of sewage into rivers and oceans causes environmental pollution and the occurrence of over 50 diseases. The impact of water pollution on human health is significant, with diarrhea being the most common disease. Strengthening water management and implementing intervention measures to improve water quality and reduce its impact on human health are necessary.

Bioaccumulation of heavy metals in fish species of Iran: a review

Hassan Sheikhzadeh et al.

Summary: Accumulation of heavy metals in fish tissues is crucial for monitoring the health of aquatic ecosystems, especially in edible parts of fish. Studies have shown that fish collected from the Persian Gulf have the highest concentrations of heavy metals, followed by species from the Caspian Sea. Fish species inhabiting the lower zone of the water column and those that are carnivorous or omnivorous tend to have higher levels of heavy metals, with the liver being the main accumulator organ.

Age-specific accumulation of toxic metal(loid)s in northern pike (Esox lucius) juveniles

Dusan Nikolic et al.

Summary: The study found that young northern pike individuals were more sensitive to pollution, but older fish showed higher overall bioaccumulation of toxic elements. Since there was no significant correlation between metal accumulation and fish condition, the relationship between age and accumulation of toxic elements was also insignificant.

Anthropogenic Transformations in the Mouth Area of Tributaries as Factors of Negative Impact on Lake Baikal

Olga V. Gagarinova et al.

Summary: The paper presents the results of complex geoecological, hydrochemical, and water-ecological studies of the mouth area of tributaries and shores of Lake Baikal. It shows that there is dynamic interaction between the mouth area of tributaries and the receiving water body, and chemical and biological accumulation and exchange processes directly affect the state of Lake Baikal's water resources. The research results indicate that pollutant accumulation on geological barriers and surface waters, along with anthropogenic activities, may exacerbate the degradation of the mouth area.
