Application of heat-activated peroxydisulfate process for the chemical cleaning of fouled ultrafiltration membranes

Jiaqi Ding et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel heat-activated peroxydisulfate (heat/PDS) process for cleaning membrane fouling caused by humic acid (HA). The combination of heat and PDS can achieve almost 100% recovery of permeate flux by changing the HA structure and enhancing foulant detachment from membranes. The properties of treated membranes are characterized, and the results demonstrate the effective removal of reversible and irreversible foulants by heat/PDS cleaning. The heat/PDS method shows comparable performance to NaClO in membrane cleaning and provides high performance in removing fouling caused by different substances, suggesting its potential as an alternative for practical membrane cleaning.

Pilot plant demonstration of temperature impacts on the methanogenic performance and membrane fouling control of the anaerobic membrane bioreactor in treating real municipal wastewater

Chao Rong et al.

Summary: The study found that at low temperatures, methane production decreased and dissolved methane increased, leading to a reduction in methanogenic performance. The membrane rejection can offset the deteriorated anaerobic digestion, ensuring stable COD removal efficiency. However, at low temperatures, the increased microbial products and residual inorganic foulants can aggravate membrane fouling.

Heat-activated persulfate for the degradation of micropollutants in water: A comprehensive review and future perspectives

Olga S. Arvaniti et al.

Summary: This work provides a critical review of recent studies on the use of heat-activated persulfate to degrade persistent micropollutants. The influence of various operating parameters, such as temperature and oxidant concentrations, is discussed, with higher temperatures and oxidant concentrations generally improving efficiency. The effect of the aqueous matrix is particularly emphasized, as studies have shown that the removal of pollutants decreases with increased complexity of the aqueous matrix, unless specific oxidative species are produced. The study also highlights the growing interest in combining different processes for persulfate activation and summarizes recent research on hybrid systems for micropollutant destruction.

Transformation of acetaminophen in solution containing both peroxymonosulfate and chlorine: Performance, mechanism, and disinfection by-product formation

Jiaqi Ding et al.

Summary: This study investigates the synergistic effect of PMS and chlorine on the degradation of micro-organic pollutants, finding that efficient ACT removal is achieved through direct catalytic chlorination by PMS at neutral conditions. The kinetic study demonstrates that ACT oxidation by PMS/chlorine follows a second order reaction, with peak rate constants at alkaline conditions. The presence of chloride enhances ACT removal, while ammonium and humic acid significantly retard ACT degradation.

Synergistic control of membrane biofouling using linoleic acid and sodium hypochlorite

So-Young Ham et al.

Summary: The study aims to enhance chemical cleaning efficiency in RO processes by combining a dispersion agent linoleic acid with sodium hypochlorite. The optimized combination results in significantly higher flux recovery efficiency and reduces the volume and thickness of biofilm, as well as the amount of extracellular polymeric substances. The combined treatment of linoleic acid and sodium hypochlorite significantly improves biofouling control in RO systems.
