Future trends of reference evapotranspiration in Sicily based on CORDEX data and Machine Learning algorithms

Fabio Di Nunno et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the reference evapotranspiration in Sicily using historical and future climate parameters, and divided the region into three homogeneous areas using a hierarchical algorithm. Machine learning algorithms were then used to forecast future evapotranspiration. The results showed that evapotranspiration increased for all three regions during the forecast period, with higher increases observed in the inland areas. This approach provides a comprehensive analysis of evapotranspiration trends in different regions.

Research on the optimal allocation of agricultural water and soil resources in the Heihe River Basin based on SWAT and intelligent optimization

Zepeng Zhang et al.

Summary: In the context of global climate change, changes in precipitation and temperature conditions have a severe impact on agricultural production. In this study, future climate and runoff were simulated using the CMIP6 and SWAT models, and future planting structures were planned using the MOPSO and NSGA-II models. The results showed an increasing trend in temperature and precipitation, with increased runoff projected in the future.

Spatial scale effect of irrigation efficiency paradox based on water accounting framework in Heihe River Basin, Northwest China

Wenjuan Cai et al.

Summary: A judgment method was developed to detect the occurrence of the irrigation efficiency paradox (IEP) in the middle Heihe River Basin. The study found that the scale effects of the IEP can vary depending on the evaluation parameters and regional characteristics. The results can be useful for implementing water-saving measures in arid regions.

Scenario simulation and comprehensive assessment of water footprint sustainability system in Heilongjiang Province, China: A model combining system dynamics with improved radar chart approach

Lili Jiang et al.

Summary: With population and economic growth, water scarcity and aquatic pollution have become widespread problems. This study used a system dynamics approach to analyze the impact of different water resource utilization scenarios on water footprint sustainability. The results showed that scenario S6 was the optimal scenario for improving water footprint sustainability and achieving coordinated development.

River flow rate prediction in the Des Moines watershed (Iowa, USA): a machine learning approach

Ahmed Elbeltagi et al.

Summary: Predicting the flow rate in rivers is crucial for water resource planning and management. This study demonstrates that accurate streamflow prediction models can be developed using a Machine Learning approach. The Des Moines watershed, including both the Des Moines River and Raccoon River, was selected for a case study. Four machine learning algorithms were used, and the M5P algorithm produced the best predictions with R-2 values of 0.970 and 0.960 for two stations on the East Fork Des Moines River at Dakota City and Des Moines River near Tracy, respectively. Accurate predictions were also achieved for the Raccoon River, with R-2 values of 0.938 and 0.887 for two stations, North Raccoon River near Jefferson and Raccoon River at Van Meter, respectively.

Novel hybrid coupling of ecohydrology and socioeconomy at river basin scale: A watershed system model for the Heihe River basin

Xin Li et al.

Summary: Watershed system models are important for understanding complex river basin systems. The study developed a watershed system model for the Heihe River basin in Northwest China, which proved reliable in simulating eco-hydrological processes and exploring interactions between water, ecology, and socioeconomy. This research contributes to a better understanding of the nexus between water, land, air, plants, and humans at the watershed scale and has implications for sustainable development in endorheic river basins.
