Impacts of Land Cover Change on the Spatial Distribution of Nonpoint Source Pollution Based on SWAT Model

Zeshu Zhang et al.

Summary: Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution is a global issue, especially in the Chesapeake Bay, where sediment, nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) are the main water quality concerns. This study investigated the spatial distribution of NPS hotspots and found that as land cover changes from agriculture to ultra-urban, the distribution of NPS pollution source areas becomes increasingly uniform. The research suggests that control strategies should be adapted based on the major land cover category of study watersheds.

SWAT model-based quantification of the impact of land-use change on forest-regulated water flow

Feng Lin et al.

Summary: This study proposes computational formulas for multi-time scale analysis of regulated water flow in watersheds with various land-use types. The results show significant variations in forest-regulated water flow at different time scales and a decrease in forest area leading to a reduction in regulated water flow.

Land use and climate variability amplifies watershed nitrogen exports in coastal China

Yaling Huang et al.

Summary: Understanding the interaction between land use and climate variability in amplifying riverine nitrogen exports is crucial for effective watershed management in rapidly urbanizing regions like coastal China. Research showed that riverine nitrate-N and ammonia-N exports increased significantly from 1961 to 2014 in correlation with urban expansion. Nitrate-N exports were influenced by river flow, fertilizer use, and land conversion, with urban areas experiencing higher runoff and nitrate-N export during flood seasons.

Various Natural and Anthropogenic Factors Responsible for Water Quality Degradation: A Review

Naseem Akhtar et al.

Summary: This study primarily discusses the increasing recognition of sustainability issues around water resource consumption under global warming and land utilization complexities, addressing the challenges in comprehending the impacts of anthropogenic activities and natural processes on surface water and groundwater systems, as well as difficulties in assessing water pollution behaviors. It focuses on the discharge of essential pollutants from industrial applications, urban development, and agricultural practices based on land-use sectors, as well as important pollutants released from natural processes in the aquatic environment.

Spatiotemporal Characteristics of the Water Quality and Its Multiscale Relationship with Land Use in the Yangtze River Basin

Jian Wu et al.

Summary: This study conducted a spatial and temporal analysis of river water quality in the Yangtze River basin from 2006 to 2018, finding that water quality has significantly improved over time, especially in tributaries. Spatially, pollutants in tributaries are higher than in the main stream, with concentrations increasing closer to the estuary. Land use, specifically agricultural land and construction land, have negative effects on water quality, while forest land and grassland have a purifying effect. The study also highlighted the seasonal and spatial dependence of land use on water quality, providing insights for land management and pollution control strategies.
