An integrated electrolysis-microfiltration-ion exchange closed-loop system for effective water softening without chemicals input and spent regenerant discharge

Xuchen Ba et al.

Summary: An energy-efficient and industrially scalable undivided electrolysis cell was developed to produce acid and alkaline effluents. The electrolysis cell was integrated with microfiltration and ion-exchange for water softening. The developed IEMI system showed great potential for scaling up the applications of electrochemical softening technology.

Progress on membrane technology for separating bioactive peptides

Ting Liang et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the separation and purification methods of bioactive peptides (BPs), and introduces a new electro-driven membrane technology for the separation of anionic and cationic BPs. Due to the unique characteristics of BPs, there is an urgent need for efficient and economical technologies for their separation and purification.

Anion exchange membranes with efficient acid recovery obtained by quaternized poly epichlorohydrin and polyvinyl alcohol during diffusion dialysis

Wei Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, quaternized poly epichlorohydrin (QPECH) was synthesized by reacting poly epichlorohydrin (PECH) with N, N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA). A series of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) were fabricated by mixing different amounts of QPECH with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and tetraethyl silicate (TEOS) through sol-gel reaction. The chemical structure of QPECH was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The physical and chemical properties of the composite membranes, including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), water uptake (WR), ion exchange capacity (IEC), linear expansion rate (LER), and diffusion dialysis (DD), were investigated using FT-IR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The performance of the PVA/QPECH composite membranes in acid recovery and selectivity was comprehensively discussed, and the results showed superior performance compared to commercial membrane DF-120. Overall, this study demonstrated the potential of using anion exchange membranes based on PVA/QPECH for acid recovery through the DD method.

Recovery of nickel in the form of Ni(OH)2 from plating wastewater containing Ni-EDTA using bipolar membrane electrodialysis

Yaoxing Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a bipolar membrane electrodialysis system was used to recover Ni in the form of Ni(OH)2 from plating wastewater without adding chemical reagents. The stable structure of Ni-EDTA can be destroyed to obtain free Ni2+ and combine with OH to form Ni(OH)2. The system showed high removal and recovery efficiency for Ni-EDTA in both synthetic and real wastewater samples.

Electrodeionization: Principle, techniques and factors influencing its performance

P. Senthil Kumar et al.

Summary: Ecosystems are increasingly polluted, calling for sustainable pollution removal techniques. Ultra-pure water has become essential for industries, with electrodeionization emerging as an effective method for removing ionic chemicals and producing high-purity water. This technique not only provides purified water but also holds promising potential for wastewater treatment, eliminating ionizable compounds, hazardous chemicals, radioactive pollutants, heavy metals, and other contaminants.

Manning condensation in ion exchange membranes: A review on ion partitioning and diffusion models

David Kitto et al.

Summary: The rational design of ion exchange membranes (IEMs) is crucial as their usage expands and their staple applications improve. This review discusses recent progress in modeling ion partitioning and diffusion in IEMs, aiming to relate IEM performance to fundamental membrane properties. The Donnan-Manning and Manning-Meares models are highlighted as leading predictors of IEM partitioning and diffusive properties.

The Donnan potential revealed

Pinar Aydogan Gokturk et al.

Summary: Donnan electrical potential, which describes ion distribution between two solutions separated by a permeable membrane, has been directly measured and compared with theoretical models in this study. The results highlight the dependence of the Donnan potential on external salt concentration and counter-ion valence, and show a reasonable agreement with current theoretical models.

Summary: This article discusses the interactions between water molecules and metals, oxides, and biomembranes, showing the fundamental similarities among these different systems. While classical mean-field theories can explain many phenomena, they often fail to explain phenomena involving molecular properties, such as interfacial chemical conversion.
