Invasive Trends of Spartina alterniflora in the Southeastern Coast of China and Potential Distributional Impacts on Mangrove Forests

Jiaying Zheng et al.

Summary: Mangrove forests are productive and threatened ecosystems, with the invasion of Spartina alterniflora posing a serious risk. Through model evaluation, RF, GBM, and GLM were selected to build a high-precision ensemble model. Using species occurrence records and environmental factors, we predicted suitable habitats for mangrove forests and potential invasion habitats for S. alterniflora in southeastern China. Results showed suitable habitats for mangrove forests primarily in Guangdong, Hainan, and the eastern coast of Guangxi, while suitable invasion habitats for S. alterniflora mainly in Zhejiang and Fujian. The study highlights the importance of bioclimate variables and provides insights for conservation and control efforts.

Effects of Spartina alterniflora Invasion on Soil Microbial Community Structure and Ecological Functions

Minmin Cao et al.

Summary: The invasion of Spartina alterniflora may alter the community structure of soil microorganisms in the mangrove ecosystem in China, particularly the bacterial community, without significant impact on the potential ecological functions of soil microorganisms. Despite changes in the structure of bacterial communities during the invasion process, the invasion of Spartina alterniflora only leads to a significant increase in a few fungal taxa at certain lower levels such as family, genus, and species.
