An overview on constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell: Greenhouse gases emissions and extracellular electron transfer

Liangjing Zhang et al.

Summary: The symbiotic relationship between constructed wetlands and microbial fuel cells (CW-MFC) can greatly enhance wastewater treatment. This review discusses CW-MFC performance in different scenarios, highlighting its strengths and weaknesses. It is concluded that CW-MFC improves wastewater treatment efficiency and reduces greenhouse gas emissions through phytoremediation, substrate competition, and dominance of electrogenic bacteria. The review also summarizes extracellular electron transfer mechanisms in CW-MFC and identifies areas for further research and practical application.

New 5,5-(1,4-Phenylenebis(methyleneoxy)diisophthalic Acid Appended Zn(II) and Cd(II) MOFs as Potent Photocatalysts for Nitrophenols

Hui-Shi Bin et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are unique multimodal materials used as photocatalysts to decompose lethal molecules in wastewater. Two new MOFs, [Zn2(L)(H2O)(bbi)] and [Cd2(L)(bbi)], were synthesized and characterized. MOF 1 demonstrated better photocatalytic performance than MOF 2 in degrading nitrophenolic compounds, specifically p-nitrophenol (PNP).

Characterization of a novel glyphosate-degrading bacterial species, Chryseobacterium sp. Y16C, and evaluation of its effects on microbial communities in glyphosate-contaminated soil

Wenping Zhang et al.

Summary: The study successfully isolated a novel bacterial strain, Y16C, which efficiently degrades glyphosate and its main metabolite AMPA. The strain was also found to tolerate and degrade AMPA at high concentrations and accelerate glyphosate degradation in soil by inducing changes in soil microbial community. This suggests that strain Y16C may be a potential microbial agent for bioremediation of glyphosate-contaminated soil.

Suspect screening based on market data of polar halogenated micropollutants in river water affected by wastewater

Frank Menger et al.

Summary: This study identified unknown CECs in the aquatic environment through a novel suspect screening approach for organohalogens, confirming or tentatively identifying thirteen suspects, including seven previously unknown structures. Spatiotemporal occurrence patterns were detected, revealing usage patterns of chemicals and pinpointing potential pollution sources, such as specific WWTPs in the catchment. Several of the newly identified structures had limited information publicly available and were detected years after their last registered use, highlighting knowledge gaps and concerns about POPs.

Organic matter removal and nitrogen transformation by a constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell system with simultaneous bioelectricity generation

Thais Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Microbial fuel cells integrated into constructed wetlands showed promising results in organic matter removal and nitrogen transformation for wastewater treatment. The presence of vegetation, particularly Schoenoplectus californicus, and the operation of the systems under batch-mode conditions led to improved performance in terms of chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency and NH4+-N removal efficiency. The study also highlighted the significance of anaerobic oxidation on the anodes in enhancing wastewater treatment performance.
