Landslides forecasting using satellite rainfall estimations and machine learning in the Colombian Andean region

Derly Gomez et al.

Summary: Due to the high topographic gradients and climatic conditions of the Colombian Andean Region (CAR), rainfall-triggered landslides have caused significant human and economic losses over time. This study proposes a methodology to spatialize the landslide hazard using Satellite Rainfall Estimations (SREs) and conditioning variables, due to the inadequate ground-rainfall gauge networks in many areas of the region. The selected SREs are evaluated using performance metrics, and a Random Forest Model (RFM) is trained and assessed for its predictive capacity. The results suggest that CHIRPSv2 is the best-performing SRE for landslide prediction in the Colombian Andean Region.

Enhancing flood susceptibility modeling using multi-temporal SAR images, CHIRPS data, and hybrid machine learning algorithms

Mostafa Riazi et al.

Summary: In this study, Sentinel-1 dB radar images and various machine learning models were used to delineate flood susceptibility areas in the Goorganrood watershed, Iran. The hybrid model Random Committee (RC-RBF) was found to be the most accurate (AUC = 0.997). Approximately 12% of the study area was identified as having high susceptibility to future floods.

Explainable artificial intelligence in geoscience: A glimpse into the future of landslide susceptibility modeling

Ashok Dahal et al.

Summary: For decades, statistical models and machine learning models have had a clear distinction – the former optimized for interpretable results and the latter aiming at maximizing predictive performance. In the field of natural hazard prediction, this difference has posed a challenge for researchers in prioritizing between performance and understanding. Recent developments in explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) have bridged this gap by combining the predictive power of machine learning with the explanatory power of statistical approaches.

Summary: This study evaluated the reliability and effectiveness of gridded climate products, particularly the CFSR and CHIRPS products, for hydrologic prediction. The results showed that CHIRPS rainfall combined with CFSR temperature can serve as a better alternative climate input for hydrological applications.

Evaluation of NCEP-GFS-based Rainfall forecasts over the Nagavali and Vamsadhara basins in India

G. Venkata Rao et al.

Summary: Rainfall forecasting is crucial for hydrological applications, and understanding the uncertainty and verifying the quality of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models is essential. This study evaluates the performance of the NCEP GFS model in predicting rainfall in the Nagavali and Vamsadhara river basins in India. The results show that the model has a high correlation coefficient and probability of detection for day-1 and day-3 forecasts, with the bias shifting from overestimation to underestimation as the lead time increases. Bias correction improves the accuracy of rainfall forecasts.

Examples of landslide dams and their stability in the Blanco River basin. Central Andes, San Juan Argentina

Maria Yanina Esper Angillieri et al.

Summary: This study investigates five landslide dams in the Blanco River basin of the Dry Andes in Argentina, analyzing their evolution and stability using stability indices. The findings reveal that while only one landslide dam catastrophically failed, the larger one called Laguna Blanca persisted for a longer duration, while the others gradually reduced in size.

Rainfall-induced landslide early warning system based on corrected mesoscale numerical models: an application for the southern Andes

Ivo Fustos-Toribio et al.

Summary: Rainfall-induced landslides (RILs) are a significant issue in the southern Andes. A pre-operational RILEWS based on the WRF model and geomorphological features is proposed in this study. The models were trained and validated using precipitation simulations and show a high predicting capacity. However, the establishment of an operational RILEWS requires a reliable RIL database and operational weather networks.
