A critical review on the treatment of dye-containing wastewater: Ecotoxicological and health concerns of textile dyes and possible remediation approaches for environmental safety

Rania Al-Tohamy et al.

Summary: The synthetic dyes used in the textile industry cause pollution in water bodies, which has negative consequences on the environment and human health. It is important to effectively treat dye-containing wastewater using eco-friendly technologies to reduce contamination of aquatic habitats and natural water resources. This review discusses the effects of textile dyes on water bodies, aquatic flora, and human health, and compares various technologies for removing dyes from textile wastewater.

Porous silica matrix as an efficient strategy to boosted photocatalytic performance of titania/carbon composite

Anna Dymerska et al.

Summary: Semiconductor based photocatalysis is a promising method for water remediation, but high recombination rate and low reaction rate hinder its large-scale application. This study presents a composite material composed of ultrasmall TiO2 nanoparticles embedded in silica/carbon matrix, which demonstrates impressive photocatalytic activity and potential for water treatment.

Natural Sunlight Driven Photocatalytic Removal of Toxic Textile Dyes in Water Using B-Doped ZnO/TiO2 Nanocomposites

Romana Akter Shathy et al.

Summary: A novel B-doped ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposite photocatalyst prepared using a mechanochemical-calcination method exhibited enhanced visible-light absorption and good photocatalytic activity for the removal of methylene blue dye. The characterization results showed reduced bandgap energy, smaller crystallite size, larger surface area, and high MB removal efficiency under optimal conditions. The B-ZnO/TiO2 photocatalyst demonstrated stability, reusability, and potential active species for photocatalysis, making it an economical and environmentally friendly option.

The effect of hydrothermal conditions on photoluminescence properties of rice husk-derived silica-carbon quantum dots for methylene blue degradation

Viona Wongso et al.

Summary: Carbon quantum dots have the potential to replace metal-based quantum dots due to their low toxicity. This study focused on preparing composite silica-carbon quantum dots from rice husks through a hydrothermal process. The variation of hydrothermal conditions was found to influence the properties of the Si-CQDs, with temperature controlling carbonization rate and acid/base additions affecting polymerization and particle size. The Si-CQD samples showed emission in the range of 469-552 nm and were evaluated for methylene blue degradation under visible light irradiation.
