HETEAC - the Hybrid End-To-End Aerosol Classification model for EarthCARE

Ulla Wandinger et al.

Summary: The Hybrid End-To-End Aerosol Classification (HETEAC) model is introduced for Earth Clouds, Aerosols and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) mission. It serves as a common baseline for algorithm development, evaluation, and implementation, ensuring consistency of aerosol products from multiple instruments and facilitating radiative-closure assessments. The model combines theoretical and end-to-end approaches to represent aerosol types in terms of microphysical, optical, and radiative properties. Four basic aerosol components are used, representing pollution, smoke, sea salt, and dust. Mixing rules are provided to calculate optical and radiative properties of any aerosol blend composed of these components. Applications in test scene generation, retrieval algorithm development, and radiative-closure assessments are discussed.

Validation of the TROPOMI/S5P aerosol layer height using EARLINET lidars

Konstantinos Michailidis et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to investigate the accuracy of the Sentinel-5P TROPOMI instrument in deriving geometric features of aerosol layers in the Mediterranean Basin. Ground-based lidar observations from the EARLINET network were used for validation. The results showed a good correlation between TROPOMI and EARLINET measurements, with TROPOMI consistently providing lower aerosol layer altitudes.

The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service: From Research to Operations

Vincent-Henri Peuch et al.

Summary: The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) is a part of the European Union's Copernicus program, providing information products on global and regional air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, and more. The service is accessible for free through the Atmosphere Data Store and has been widely used by millions of users worldwide. CAMS plays a crucial role in supporting policy-making and scientific research, and its importance is recognized in international assessment reports.

First retrieval of absorbing aerosol height over dark target using TROPOMI oxygen B band: Algorithm development and application for surface particulate matter estimates

Xi Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, an algorithm was developed for retrieving the aerosol optical central height (AOCH) of absorbing aerosols using TROPOMI data, providing a new approach to monitor surface air pollution. The results showed good agreement with space-borne lidar CALIOP counterparts, demonstrating the potential of AOCH for improving surface PM2.5 estimates.
