Satellite derived bathymetry using deep learning

Mahmoud Al Najar et al.

Summary: Coastal development and urban planning face challenges such as natural disasters and extreme storms. Tracking and predicting the physical characteristics of coastal areas over time is crucial for coastal development, risk mitigation, and coastal zone management. Traditional bathymetry measurements using echo-sounding techniques can be expensive and complex. This research introduces two innovative approaches using deep learning to estimate bathymetry, demonstrating their accuracy and applicability to real data.

ICESat-2 Bathymetric Signal Reconstruction Method Based on a Deep Learning Model with Active-Passive Data Fusion

Zihao Leng et al.

Summary: When carrying out SDB in island area based on ICESat-2 data, it is often found that the bathymetric signals are partially missing. In this paper, a method based on active-passive data fusion is proposed to reconstruct the missing signals. It is found that this method can effectively reconstruct the local missing bathymetric signals.

Nearshore Bathymetry Based on ICESat-2 and Multispectral Images: Comparison Between Sentinel-2, Landsat-8, and Testing Gaofen-2

Xiaohan Zhang et al.

Summary: Accurate bathymetric maps are crucial for understanding marine and coastal ecosystems. Satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) has become widely used for measuring nearshore water depths with the advancement of satellite and sensor technology. Empirical methods based on in situ measurements and satellite imagery have gained popularity due to their convenience, low cost, and efficiency. The Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) provides a new opportunity for nearshore bathymetry by using photon counting to accurately measure water depths from spaceborne observations. This study demonstrates the applicability and accuracy of ICESat-2-derived bathymetric points in producing bathymetric maps for coastal areas and islands.

Island feature classification for single-wavelength airborne lidar bathymetry based on full-waveform parameters

Xue Ji et al.

Summary: Single-wavelength airborne lidar bathymetry (ALB) is ideal for shallow water measurements due to its lightweight, low-cost, and high sampling density. The key difficulty in signal detection lies in waveform classification, which is caused by severe waveform mixing. This work focuses on morphological features in different waveforms to classify isolated, supersaturated, land, and water waveforms, achieving a high classification accuracy of 97%.

Bathymetric Retrieval Selectively Using Multiangular High-Spatial-Resolution Satellite Imagery

Bin Cao et al.

Summary: This study introduces multiangular imagery into physics-based bathymetry to compensate for the shortage of bathymetric spectral bands, and proposes a selective bathymetric retrieval method to eliminate the negative effect of nonoptimal image data on depth retrieval. The method selectively uses multiangular image data to improve depth retrieval accuracy.
