Salt marsh invasion reduces recalcitrant organic carbon pool while increases lateral export of dissolved inorganic carbon in a subtropical mangrove wetland

Zeyang Lu et al.

Summary: Mangrove wetlands are important ecosystems that store large amounts of organic carbon. However, the invasion of S. alterniflora-dominated salt marsh can disrupt the carbon cycling in mangroves. This study conducted investigations in a subtropical mangrove wetland in China and found that S. alterniflora invasion increased the labile organic carbon content in sediment and decreased the proportion of recalcitrant organic carbon. The invasion also led to higher anaerobic mineralization rate and CO2 production, potentially exporting more dissolved inorganic carbon to the estuary.

Spatial Distribution of Soil Organic Carbon and Total Nitrogen in a Ramsar Wetland, Dafeng Milu National Nature Reserve

Xiuying Yao et al.

Summary: The invasion and expansion of Spartina alterniflora have greatly impacted the material cycle of coastal salt marsh wetlands. This study found that soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) showed moderate variability and similar spatial distributions, with the highest values in the southwest of the study area. SOC and TN were significantly higher in areas with Spartina alterniflora as the dominant species compared to bare land. Redundancy analysis revealed that TN and aboveground biomass influenced the spatial distribution of SOC, while SOC and aboveground biomass dominated the spatial distribution of TN.

Integrating UAV data for assessing the ecological response of Spartina alterniflora towards inundation and salinity gradients in coastal wetland

Dandan Yan et al.

Summary: This study integrated unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and field sampling data to assess the ecological response of Spartina alterniflora to inundation and salinity gradients. The results showed that soil salinity significantly affected the growth of S. alterniflora. This is the first spatially quantitative analysis to study the ecohydrological mechanism driving the growth of S. alterniflora.

Examining the expansion of Spartina alterniflora in coastal wetlands using an MCE-CA-Markov model

Dandan Yan et al.

Summary: The spread of Spartina alterniflora in China has posed a risk to biodiversity and ecosystem function. This study used multi criteria evaluation and CA Markov model to forecast the spatial expansion of S. alterniflora for the next ten years in Dafeng Milu National Nature Reserve, Jiangsu, China. The model predicted a gradual decrease in the area of S. alterniflora.

Self-organization of salt marsh patches on mudflats: Field evidence using the UAV technique

Weiqi Dai et al.

Summary: The salt marsh system on the tidal flat is highly productive and plays a significant role in blue carbon sequestration. Research indicates that the distribution of marsh patches follows a power law, suggesting self-organization criticality and scale-independence. External dynamic conditions, such as sediment erosion and accretion, negatively impact the self-organization process of salt marsh patches.

Quantifying the Long-Term Expansion and Dieback of Spartina Alterniflora Using Google Earth Engine and Object-Based Hierarchical Random Forest Classification

Dandan Yan et al.

Summary: The widespread spread of Spartina alterniflora in China poses a threat to native plant communities and coastal environments. By integrating GEE and RF classification, it has been shown that it is feasible to accurately quantify the expansion and dieback of this invasive species for improved management and conservation efforts.
