Intelligent Path Planning Technologies of Underwater Vehicles: a Review

Dong An et al.

Summary: Underwater vehicles play important roles in marine resource exploration and civil-military fields. Path planning is crucial in underwater vehicle control. Graph searching-type algorithms, sampling-based algorithms, and potential field-based algorithms are widely used, but traditional methods have poor adaptability in dynamic unstructured environments. This work introduces intelligent path planning technologies in detail and summarizes collaborative and coverage path planning for underwater vehicles, while providing prospects for the future development direction of underwater vehicle path planning.

A path planning approach for unmanned surface vehicles based on dynamic and fast Q-learning

Bing Hao et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel algorithm DFQL to solve the path planning problem for unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) in partially known maritime environments. The algorithm combines Q-learning with artificial potential field (APF) to provide a priori knowledge from the environment to USV and uses static and dynamic rewards to motivate the USV to move toward the target. The algorithm's performance is verified with offline and online modes in different environmental conditions.

Vessel scheduling model with resource restriction considerations for restricted channel in ports

Xing Jiang et al.

Summary: Restricted channels have many constraints on vessel scheduling, which affect the safety and efficiency of vessel transportation. In this study, a mathematical optimization model and an elite selection genetic algorithm (e-GA) were proposed to optimize vessel scheduling in ports with restricted channels. Case studies were conducted using a customized model of the Port of Huanghua, which proved the rationality and reliability of the optimization model and the effectiveness of e-GA. The results showed that the optimization model and e-GA can provide better decision-making for vessel scheduling in restricted channels compared to traditional strategies.

Marine radar monitoring IoT system and case study of target detection based on PPI images

Qiming Zhang et al.

Summary: To ensure ship navigation safety, it is necessary to detect targets in sea clutter background. The commonly used target detection equipments for ship navigation are marine radar and automatic identification system (AIS) device. However, marine radar echoes are often mixed with clutter and weak targets may lack AIS devices, resulting in difficulty with detection. Existing marine monitoring systems have low accuracy in identifying weak targets. To improve detection accuracy using radar echo and AIS information, a Marine radar monitoring Internet of Things system is proposed with radar working in scanning and staring modes. Through image segmentation and deep learning, accurate detection of weak targets based on plan-position indicator (PPI) images is achieved. A case study using X-band radar datasets shows high target identification accuracy.

A cellular automata ship traffic flow model considering navigation rules in narrowing channel

Liang Chen et al.

Summary: This paper presents an analysis and application method of ship traffic flow considering navigation rules in narrowing channel. It aims to provide a reasonable judgment for decision makers to improve navigation efficiency and ensure navigation safety. The relationship model between narrowing channel and ships is analyzed, and navigation rules are formulated for different positions of the channel. The mutual influence of ships at the narrowed position is also analyzed. A traffic flow model of narrowing channel with navigation safety distance is proposed using cellular automata algorithm, and its correctness is verified with measured data. The experimental results demonstrate that the method can effectively capture the characteristics of actual ship traffic flow in narrowing channels.

Track Pairs Collision Detection with Applications to Ship Collision Risk Assessment

Jiahui Shi et al.

Summary: The port waterway network plays a crucial role in organizing and managing port ship traffic. However, limited ship operations often lead to conflicts, congestion, and safety issues in port waters. To predict conflicts between ships, a novel collision detection algorithm for trajectory pairs is proposed, along with an improved algorithm for ship trajectory compression. Based on the evaluation and analysis of waters near Ningbo Zhoushan Port, a risk assessment framework for maritime collisions is established.
