Stochastic Higher-Order Independent Component Analysis for Hyperspectral Dimensionality Reduction

Daniela Lupu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new stochastic algorithm called SHOICA, which approximates the non-convex loss functions of ICA using higher-order Taylor minorizers. It shows that SHOICA is faster and provides better feature extraction compared to the commonly used FastICA. Experimental results on real hyperspectral images validate the advantages of SHOICA in dimensionality reduction and classification tasks.

Do-it-yourself VIS/NIR pushbroom hyperspectral imager with C-mount optics

Marie Boe Henriksen et al.

Summary: This paper describes a new optomechanical design based on a previously presented do-it-yourself pushbroom hyperspectral imager (HSI) using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components. The new design increases the throughput by using larger aperture C-mount, allowing imaging at lower light levels. The design also reduces smile and keystone effects, and presents a method to remove second order effects using a cut-off filter.

Self-Organizing Maps for Clustering Hyperspectral Images On-Board a CubeSat

Aksel S. Danielsen et al.

Summary: Hyperspectral remote sensing provides detailed information about the optical response of a scene. Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs) can partition hyperspectral datasets into clusters to enable more analysis on-board imaging platforms and reduce downlink time. The on-board performance of the SOM algorithm is calculated within different satellite operational procedures, and it is found that SOMs can run on target hardware, achieve low quantization error, and classify with high accuracy when class labels are assigned.

Towards On-Board Hyperspectral Satellite Image Segmentation: Understanding Robustness of Deep Learning through Simulating Acquisition Conditions

Jakub Nalepa et al.

Summary: Hyperspectral images provide detailed information about scanned objects, but face challenges in efficient analysis, transfer, and storage due to their large volume. Deep learning has become the state of the art for classifying and segmenting such images, but deploying large-capacity models on Earth observation satellites brings technological challenges. Simulating atmospheric conditions is crucial for obtaining learners that generalize well over images acquired in different settings.

In-Orbit Measurements and Analysis of Radio Interference in the UHF Amateur Radio Band from the LUME-1 Satellite

Gara Quintana-Diaz et al.

Summary: This article discusses the challenges of dealing with radio interference in the uplink communication to satellites in the UHF amateur radio band, and emphasizes the importance of interference measurements and improving communication system reliability. By using a low complexity estimator on an SDR to study interference dispersion and temporal variation, the study validates the efficacy of this method through theoretical analysis, simulations, and laboratory results. In-orbit measurements on-board the LUME-1 satellite reveal the presence of band-limited interference with pulsed temporal behavior and a high coefficient of variation, particularly over regions with space-tracking radars.

ANALYSIS AND MODEL DEVELOPMENT OF DIRECT HYPERSPECTRAL CHLOROPHYLL-A ESTIMATION FOR REMOTE SENSING SATELLITES

Sivert Bakken et al.

Summary: Advancements in instruments have made it more feasible to process hyperspectral data for monitoring phytoplankton dynamics, but data rate limitations make it difficult to use sensors with high spectral resolution. The retrieval of chl-a is important in coastal waters, which are crucial for aquaculture, marine science, and environmental monitoring. Models perform better in terms of NRMSE and R-2 when validated with a subset of the total data and with a separate scene.
