Recent Decline of Irrigation-Induced Cooling Effect Over the North China Plain in Observations and Model Simulations

Summary: Irrigation activities over the North China Plain have been found to lower temperature by altering the surface energy budget. However, our investigation reveals a shift in the cooling effect around 1995, coinciding with changes in irrigated area expansion and water-conserving irrigation technology. The subsequent deceleration in irrigation-induced cooling is expected to contribute to a more rapid warming.

Amplified warming induced by large-scale application of water-saving techniques

This study quantifies the impact of water-saving techniques (WSTs) on the local climate in Northwest China and reveals that the adoption of WSTs has led to an increase in temperature and a decrease in humidity. Additionally, a threshold value of WST coverage is found before any noticeable warming effect occurs, and regions with relatively humid climates respond more significantly to WST.

Simulating the effects of low-temperature stress on wheat biomass growth and yield

Summary: In this study, new algorithms were proposed to quantify the impacts of low-temperature stress on wheat productivity, which were incorporated into the WheatGrow model. The improved model successfully simulated the variation of photosynthesis rate, leaf area index, biomass, and grain yield under low-temperature stress. Although further validation is required with field data, this research provides important insights into the importance of understanding the effects of low-temperature stress on wheat production.
