Exploring ecosystem responses to coastal exploitation and identifying their spatial determinants: Re-orienting ecosystem conservation strategies for landscape management

Jicheng Guo et al.

Summary: Coastal ecosystems in China provide important ecosystem services. This study examined the dominant change trends in ecosystem services in southeastern China and explored the determinants, spatial heterogeneity, and spillover effects. The results showed that rapid urbanization and land reclamation had profound impacts on coastal ecosystems, leading to declines in carbon stock, soil retention, and habitat quality, while increasing water yield and nitrogen export. Environmental, socioeconomic, and landscape variables were identified as important drivers of ecosystem service changes, and their spatial patterns exhibited significant heterogeneity and spillover effects.

Linking Critical Zone With Watershed Science: The Example of the Heihe River Basin

Xin Li et al.

Summary: The Heihe River basin (HRB), with its unique mountain cryosphere-oasis-desert landscapes and human-nature competition for water resources, has provided an excellent case for the study of critical zones (CZs) and watershed systems. Significant progress and breakthroughs have been made in understanding cryospheric hydrological processes, ecological and hydrological interactions, and surface-groundwater interactions in the HRB. However, challenges remain in observing and modeling geochemical and geomorphological processes in integrated watershed studies.

The limits of coastal and marine areas in Andalusia (Spain). A socio-ecological approach for ecosystem-based management

Maria de Andres et al.

Summary: Coastal and marine areas are highly relevant spaces for management and conservation processes globally due to their unique interactions between land and sea and their concentration of population settlements. However, there is a lack of agreed definition for the coastal zone, leading to simplification of the reality in legal delimitations and hindering the development of Ecosystem Based Management. This study proposes a conceptual and geographical delimitation of coastal areas from a socio-ecological perspective, highlighting the need to integrate socio-ecological boundaries into legal limits for effective Ecosystem-Based Management in coastal and marine areas.

Spatial suitability evaluation of coastal zone, and zoning optimisation in ningbo, China

Baoquan Wei et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the spatial suitability of coastal zones in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, China, and finds a large ecological space, strong development intensity, and pressure on sustainable development. Strengthening land use management and control is necessary to protect ecological, agricultural, and fishery resources in this area.

Watershed science: Linking hydrological science with sustainable management of river basins

Chansheng He et al.

Summary: In recent years, advancements in hydrological research and water resources management have failed to effectively address the intensifying global water crisis. The lack of interaction between hydrological research and water resource management is identified as a key issue. Watershed science has the potential to bridge this gap and provide a new approach to addressing the current water crisis and achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Novel hybrid coupling of ecohydrology and socioeconomy at river basin scale: A watershed system model for the Heihe River basin

Xin Li et al.

Summary: Watershed system models are important for understanding complex river basin systems. The study developed a watershed system model for the Heihe River basin in Northwest China, which proved reliable in simulating eco-hydrological processes and exploring interactions between water, ecology, and socioeconomy. This research contributes to a better understanding of the nexus between water, land, air, plants, and humans at the watershed scale and has implications for sustainable development in endorheic river basins.

Data integration and participatory process in developing integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) in the northern Baltic Sea

Reija Hietala et al.

Summary: The EU ratified the MSP Directive and Blue Economy Strategy, incorporating ICZM elements to manage maritime activities and resources effectively. By developing various approaches for land-sea interactions based on local challenges and spatial data, the study aimed to enhance ICZM throughout Europe. The application of ICZM plans to national MSP processes supported the sustainable development of coastal areas in Estonia and Finland.
