Hunte 4: Re-validation of a Bell Beaker domestic site in the Dummer region in northwestern Germany

Jan Piet Brozio et al.

Summary: The Dummer region in northwestern Germany is one of the few areas in the central North European Plain with settlement structures of Single Grave groups (SG) and the Bell Beaker (BB) phenomenon. Recent research at the Hunte 4 site has identified a Late SG and BB site, revealing a temporary use of the site. This suggests a settlement system in the Dummer region during the second half of the third millennium BCE and the beginning of the second millennium BCE, with at least one permanent settlement and potentially more temporary sites. The region also marks the southern border of a settlement system characterized by less domestic site and fewer permanent settlement sites and building structures, indicating a higher translocality of individuals and groups in this area.

Holocene lake-level evolution of Lake Tiefer See, NE Germany, caused by climate and land cover changes

Martin Theuerkauf et al.

Summary: The study found that land cover changes have an impact on lake-level fluctuations during the Holocene, with most fluctuations being unrelated to climatic changes and instead related to natural and anthropogenic land cover changes. The observed amplitudes of lake-level fluctuations are larger than expected from climatic changes alone, emphasizing the importance of considering land cover changes in lake catchments in the interpretation of past lake-level fluctuations.

Finding Mesolithic Sites: A Multichannel Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) Investigation at the Ancient Lake Duvensee

Erica Corradini et al.

Summary: The shift to the early Holocene in northern Europe influenced the activities and occupation of hunter-gatherers. The study of the ancient lake Duvensee and the use of ground radar mapping and excavations allowed for the reconstruction of the paleoenvironment and the identification of potential dwelling sites. The research also discovered previously unknown islands.

Exploring short-term ecosystem dynamics in connection with the Early Holocene Saksunarvatn Ash fallout over continental Europe

Marco Zanon et al.

Summary: Estimating the environmental and societal impact of recent volcanic eruptions is aided by direct measurements and historical sources; analyzing the annually laminated sequences of two Central European lakes helped minimize dating errors for prehistoric volcanism; a high resolution palaeoenvironmental characterization indicates possible multi-decadal, continuous volcanic impacts on the environment.

How Ground Penetrating Radar helps to understand the Nhecolandia lakes landscape in the Brazilian Pantanal wetland

Fabio Taioli et al.

Summary: The Pantanal wetland serves as an important area for sedimentation studies, although sediment analysis is challenging due to homogeneity and lack of outcrops. GPR analysis has been used in the Lower Nhecolandia region to characterize subsurface stratigraphy and understand regional geomorphic evolution. The results suggest that GPR is a valuable tool for elucidating the geological evolution of the Pantanal.
