Energetic Constraints on the Pattern of Changes to the Hydrological Cycle under Global Warming

David B. Bonan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the response of zonal-mean P-E to global warming using a moist energy balance model (MEBM) and finds that the MEBM accurately emulates the changes in zonal-mean P-E simulated by global climate models (GCMs) under greenhouse gas forcing. The intermodel spread in P-E change is attributed to intermodel differences in radiative feedbacks, with tropical feedbacks being the primary source of intermodel spread. The study also shows how the pattern of climate feedbacks affects the changes in precipitation and evaporation through idealized experiments.

A Novel Two-Step Method for Enforcing Water Budget Closure and an Intercomparison of Budget Closure Correction Methods Based on Satellite Hydrological Products

Zengliang Luo et al.

Summary: Enforcing terrestrial water budget closure is crucial for obtaining consistent data sets of budget components. However, existing methods are affected by errors in the budget-component products and do not fully consider the preselection of high-precision input data sets. This study proposes a two-step method that selects high-precision data sets and enforces water budget closure using an improved correction strategy. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly improves the accuracy of budget-corrected data sets compared to existing methods.

A method for balancing the terrestrial water budget and improving the estimation of individual budget components

Zengliang Luo et al.

Summary: Enforcing water budget closure is important for understanding water movement, but existing methods do not consider improving the performance of budget-corrected datasets. This study proposes a method for enforcing terrestrial water budget closure and improving estimation by combining measurements and error adjustment factors. The proposed method was verified in nine major basins in mainland China, showing significant improvement in performance compared to existing methods.

Making the Best Use of GRACE, GRACE-FO and SMAP Data Through a Constrained Bayesian Data-Model Integration

Nooshin Mehrnegar et al.

Summary: In this study, a newly developed Constrained Bayesian (ConBay) optimization approach is used to merge the TWSC of GRACE/GRACE-FO with SMAP soil moisture data and assess the groundwater storage of the High Plain aquifer in the United States. The results show that assimilating GRACE/GRACE-FO data can improve groundwater estimates, and incorporating SMAP data controls the updates of surface storage.

Jintao Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that satellite-based precipitation products generally outperform model-based products, but the latter perform better in high-latitude regions and winter. ERA5 and ERA5-Land show similar spatio-temporal patterns and have their own advantages. Satellite products perform best in subregions of subtropical and tropical monsoon climate.

Review of GPM IMERG performance: A global perspective

Rajani K. Pradhan et al.

Summary: IMERG products show variation in performance across different geographical locations and climatic conditions, but overall they can appropriately estimate and detect regional precipitation patterns, with room for improvement particularly in mountainous areas and winter precipitation. Despite limitations in reproducing precipitation intensity, each new version of IMERG demonstrates substantial improvement across almost every spatiotemporal scale and climate condition.

Water Budget Closure in the Upper Chao Phraya River Basin, Thailand Using Multisource Data

Tsuyoshi Kinouchi et al.

Summary: Accurate quantification of the terrestrial water cycle in the upper Chao Phraya River Basin is achieved through the combination of multisource datasets. The analysis considers remotely sensed, in-situ, and reanalysis records to calculate the terrestrial water budget and uncertainties of its components. Different closure techniques are applied, resulting in multiple probabilistic realizations of the monthly water budget. An artificial neural network model is used to fill data gaps and improve accuracy. The cumulative residual error in the water budget ensemble mean accounts for approximately 15% of the ensemble mean for precipitation and evapotranspiration. The study findings provide important insights for regional hydroclimate modeling and water resource management.

How well are we able to close the water budget at the global scale?

Fanny Lehmann et al.

Summary: The study attempts to close the global water budget at the catchment scale using precipitation, evapotranspiration, and runoff data. Results show that the reconstructed terrestrial water storage (TWS) changes from the water balance equation are more accurate than the GRACE data. The performance of different datasets varies in different climatic zones, indicating that the optimal combination of datasets depends on climatic conditions and other factors.
