Spatial-temporal dynamics of land surface phenology over Africa for the period of 1982-2015

Siqi Shi et al.

Summary: The study examines the latitudinal and longitudinal variations and temporal trends of vegetation phenology in Africa. From 1982 to 2015, the start, peak, and end of the growing season in Africa became later. The length of the growing season increased in northern Africa but decreased in southern Africa. The NDVI index reached saturation around the 2000s despite the continuing extension of the growing season.

NDVI-based ecological dynamics of forest vegetation and its relationship to climate change in Romania during 1987-2018

Remus Pravalie et al.

Summary: This study analyzed recent ecological changes in forests across Romania in relation to climate dynamics. The results showed a general greening trend in forests nationally, particularly in the Carpathians region, while a browning trend was found in the Extra-Carpathians region. The analysis also suggested that warming in the Carpathians may be driving the forest greening, while increased evapotranspiration may contribute to forest browning in lowland areas.

Detecting abrupt change in land cover in the eastern Hindu Kush region using Landsat time series (1988-2020)

Saeed A. Khan et al.

Summary: Land cover change and its relationship with floods in the semi-arid environment of the eastern Hindu Kush region were investigated using long-term Landsat image time series and the BFAST method. The results showed that approximately 95% of the study area experienced at least one abrupt change during 1988-2020, with floods being the primary driver of this change.

Characterization of Wildfires and Harvesting Forest Disturbances and Recovery Using Landsat Time Series: A Case Study in Mediterranean Forests in Central Italy

Carmelo Bonannella et al.

Summary: Large-scale forest monitoring greatly benefits from change detection analysis based on remote sensing data, which was demonstrated in a case study in Central Italy focusing on harvesting operations and forest fires. By analyzing temporal behaviors and recovery metrics, it was found that harvested areas tend to recover faster with less variability compared to burned areas, with specific spectral bands and indices proving to be effective predictors for differentiating between the two disturbances.

Smallholder farmers' willingness to pay for sustainable land management practices in the Upper Blue Nile basin, Ethiopia

Gashaw Tenna Alemu et al.

Summary: This study in the Upper Blue Nile basin in Ethiopia examined farmers' potential willingness to pay (WTP) for sustainable land management practices. The survey data from 300 household heads showed that most farmers were willing to contribute labor, but the average WTP was lower than the government set value. Results from the econometric model revealed that factors such as sex, age group, farmland size, training, and perception of land degradation influenced farmers' WTP.

Changes in ecosystem service values strongly influenced by human activities in contrasting agro-ecological environments

Mulatu Liyew Berihun et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of human activity driven land-use/land-cover changes on ecosystem service values over a period of 1982-2016/17 in different agro-ecological environments in the Upper Blue Nile basin of Ethiopia. Results showed that the expansion of cultivated land at the expense of natural vegetation severely reduced ecosystem service values, with the major contributor being the reduction in natural forest area.

Mangrove Forest Cover and Phenology with Landsat Dense Time Series in Central Queensland, Australia

Debbie A. Chamberlain et al.

Summary: Wetlands are highly productive ecosystems that provide a wide range of ecosystem services. However, human activities such as land use change and water regulation infrastructure have disrupted the connectivity of wetlands with other ecosystems. Studies in Australia have shown a decline in mangrove forests over the past decade, with their growth patterns being influenced by extreme weather events.

Conversion of crop land use to plantation land use, northwest Ethiopia

Tigist Worku et al.

Summary: This study conducted in the northwest highlands of Ethiopia shows a significant increase in plantation cover, with A. Decurrens plantation being the main driver of land use change. Planting A. Decurrens plantations is seen as a means to rehabilitate degraded mountainous areas.

Integrating MODIS and Landsat Data for Land Cover Classification by Multilevel Decision Rule

Xudong Guan et al.

Summary: A decision fusion scheme is proposed to improve land cover classification accuracy by integrating MODIS time series data with Landsat moderate-high spatial resolution data. The method includes two processes and uses an object-oriented weight assignment method to address the resolution difference between MODIS and Landsat data. Testing in northeast Thailand showed that the multilevel decision fusion results had a higher overall accuracy compared to single data source classification results.

The impacts of Acacia decurrens plantations on livelihoods in rural Ethiopia

Zerihun Nigussie et al.

Summary: The study found that small-scale tree plantations have brought benefits to farmers in terms of increased income, job opportunities, and improved social life. However, associated risks such as rising food prices and child labor issues need to be addressed. More measures are necessary to balance food security and plantation systems for economically disadvantaged farmers to participate effectively.
