Effects of Melatonin Treatment on Sweet Cherry Tree Yield and Fruit Quality

Alberto Carrion-Antoli et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of preharvest melatonin treatment on crop yield and fruit quality properties in sweet cherries. The results showed that melatonin treatment had no significant effect on crop yield, but decreased decayed and cracked fruit percentage. Fruit quality traits and the levels of bioactive compounds were enhanced by melatonin treatments.

Identification of a novel function of a component in the jasmonate signaling pathway for intensive pesticide degradation in rice and environment through an epigenetic mechanism

Li Ya Ma et al.

Summary: This study revealed a novel epigenetic mechanism involving OsCOI1a that enhances rice resistance to ATZ toxicity by mediating the degradation of the pesticide. The research demonstrated the causal relationships between DNA demethylation, OsCOI1a expression, and the detoxification and degradation of ATZ in rice and the environment. This work provides insights into a potential approach for metabolic engineering of rice to reduce ATZ levels in crops and the environment.

Morphophysiology of Potato (Solanum tuberosum) in Response to Drought Stress: Paving the Way Forward

Dominic Hill et al.

Summary: The cultivated potato is an important food crop globally and in developing countries, but climate change poses a threat to its yields as it becomes hotter and drier in some regions. Besides its shallow root system, other morphophysiological features of the potato are likely contributing to its drought susceptibility. Research explores traits associated with drought tolerance in potatoes, such as small canopies, open stem-type canopies, and densely rooted cultivars, which have been overlooked in the past.

Physiological and Molecular Responses to Acid Rain Stress in Plants and the Impact of Melatonin, Glutathione and Silicon in the Amendment of Plant Acid Rain Stress

Biswojit Debnath et al.

Summary: Air pollution, particularly in urban areas, has accelerated the formation of acid rain over time. Recent industrial and economic growth has made it a serious global environmental issue and a major abiotic stress to agriculture. Research has shown the potential of silicon, glutathione and melatonin in mitigating the effects of acid rain stress on plant growth.

Exogenous melatonin protects alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) seedlings from drought-induced damage by modulating reactive oxygen species metabolism, mineral balance and photosynthetic efficiency

Momi Roy et al.

Summary: Exogenous foliar application of melatonin can enhance the growth and physiological responses of alfalfa plants under drought stress, including promoting antioxidant enzyme activities, improving photosynthetic performance, reducing oxidative damage, increasing mineral content, and improving leaf water status. The optimal efficiency was achieved at a dosage of 100µM melatonin. These findings provide a new perspective on melatonin-mediated drought stress tolerance in alfalfa and offer insights for alfalfa cultivation in drought-prone regions globally.
