2.2 V wearable asymmetric supercapacitors based on Co oxide//Mn oxide electrodes and a PVA-KOH-urea-LiClO4 alkaline gel electrolyte

Ming -Jay Deng et al.

Summary: This study prepared a wearable asymmetric supercapacitor (WASC) with a redox-active polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-KOH-urea-LiClO4 gel electrolyte, consisting of nanoporous Co oxide and Mn oxide electrodes. The WASC operated at an output voltage of 2.2V and achieved a high energy density of 125 Wh/kg at 2200 W/kg. It exhibited good performance (186 F/g at 2 A/g) and 89.5% capacitance retention after 6000 charging/discharging cycles. The Co oxide electrode underwent reversible oxidation state-alteration reaction associated with redox pseudocapacitance reaction in PVA-KOH-urea-LiClO4, as revealed by in-situ/ operando X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. Real-life applications of the WASCs were demonstrated by powering a light-emitting diode and a digital watch.

Enhanced energy density quasi-solid-state supercapacitor based on an ionic liquid incorporated aqueous gel polymer electrolyte with a redox-additive trimethyl sulfoxonium iodide

Abbas Ali Hor et al.

Summary: Enhancing interfacial redox activities by introducing a redox-active species in electrolytes is a latest strategy to enhance the performance characteristics of supercapacitors. In this study, an aqueous redox-active gel polymer electrolyte (R-GPE) is synthesized using a redox-active salt (trimethyl-sulfoxonium iodide, TMSI) added into an ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, EMICl), entrapped in a host polymer poly(vinyl alcohol). The R-GPE film exhibits high flexibility and excellent electrochemical properties, making it suitable for supercapacitor applications. Two supercapacitors are fabricated using R-GPE with and without TMSI, respectively, showing significantly improved performance with higher specific capacitance (-613 F g-1) and specific energy (-69 Wh kg-1) compared to the device without TMSI. The R-GPE-based supercapacitor demonstrates a moderate rate capability and good cycling stability.

Highly efficient and stable layered AgZnS@WS2 nanocomposite electrode as superior charge transfer and active redox sites for energy harvesting device

Asad Ur Rehman et al.

Summary: Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are excellent candidates for energy storage applications due to their 2D structure and electrochemical features. However, their poor stability limits their potential as supercapattery electrode materials. In this study, tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanosheets were combined with hydrothermally synthesized silver zinc sulfide (AgZnS) nanostructures to create a hybrid electrode material with superior charge transfer and active redox sites. The AgZnS@WS2 hybrid electrode exhibited a high specific capacity and excellent electrochemical performance, making it suitable for industrial applications as a supercapattery electrode material.

A highly stretchable, self-healable, transparent and solid-state poly(ionic liquid) filler for high-performance dielectric elastomer actuators

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: By adding a soft, stretchable, transparent, and solid-state poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) as a compliant filler, the actuation performance of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) can be improved. The PIL filler provides high dielectric constant and low Young's modulus, increasing the strain and bending angle of the DEAs. Notably, the PIL filler also eliminates filler leakage problems and enables the DEAs to have recoverability. The solid-state PIL filler can be used for soft robotics, interactive lighting, or wearables.

Gel electrolytes and aerogel electrodes from ILs-based emulsions for supercapacitor applications

Wenna Wu et al.

Summary: Electrochemical double-layer supercapacitors, as advanced energy storage devices, have the properties of portability and stable performance. In this study, an oil-in-water emulsion was strategically established and used as a template for preparing emulsion gel electrolytes. The emulsion gels showed high ionic conductivity, excellent mechanical strength, superior thermal stability, and freezing resistance. By assembling the emulsion gels as electrolytes and hierarchically porous aerogels as electrode materials, all-solid-state supercapacitors with large energy density, power density, and promising stability were fabricated.

Summary: This study demonstrates the development of wearable supercapacitors with repeated shape editability, excellent self-healing capability, and long-term cycling durability by sandwiching hydrogel electrolytes between two electrodes. The use of hydrogel electrolytes with unique cross-linking structures enhances the long-term cycling durability, while the dynamic crosslinking sites stabilize the supercapacitors during charge-discharge processes. The fabricated supercapacitors show high capacitance retention rates and can be repeatedly processed into various shapes without losing capacitance.

Enhanced Pseudocapacitive Performance of Symmetric Polypyrrole-MnO2 Electrode and Polymer Gel Electrolyte

Wen-Jun Zhuo et al.

Summary: In this study, nanostructured polypyrrole-coated MnO2 nanofibers grown on carbon cloth (PPy-MnO2-CC) were used as electrodes along with a quasi-ionic liquid-based polymer gel electrolyte for solid-state symmetric supercapacitors. The resulting solid-state supercapacitors exhibited high specific capacitance, energy/power density, cycling stability, and rate capability, surpassing most previously reported supercapacitors. The outstanding performance of the flexible PPy-MnO2-CC solid-state supercapacitors is attributed to the design of the nanostructured PPy-coated MnO2 composite electrode and the urea-LiClO4-PVA polymer gel electrolyte.
