Polyols and Polyurethane Foams Based on Water-Soluble Chitosan

Anna Maria Strzalka et al.

Summary: Currently, the majority of polyols used in the synthesis of polyurethane foams are derived from petrochemicals. However, due to the decreasing availability of crude oil, alternative resources such as plant oils, carbohydrates, starch, or cellulose need to be utilized as substrates for polyols. Chitosan, a biopolymer, shows promise as a candidate for polyol synthesis. This paper investigates the use of chitosan to obtain polyols and rigid polyurethane foams through various synthesis methods. The resulting chitosan-derived polyols were characterized and used to produce polyurethane foams with desirable properties. The chitosan-based polyols and polyurethane foams were found to be biodegradable.

Determination of the temperature-dependent thermophysical properties of polymeric foams using numerical inverse analysis

A. P. C. Duarte et al.

Summary: This study presents a numerical inverse analysis method to determine the thermal conductivity and specific heat of polymeric foams at high temperatures. Experimental results and the proposed procedure are discussed and validated through simulations of the thermal response of a sandwich panel subjected to fire. The numerical procedure is found to accurately estimate the temperature-dependent thermal properties of the foams at high temperatures.

Sources, production and commercial applications of fungal chitosan: A review

Tanzina Huq et al.

Summary: Chitosan, a biopolymer, can be obtained from animal/marine sources or derived from agricultural waste like mushrooms or various fungi through chitin deacetylation. The cell walls of filamentous fungi provide an easy method for chitin extraction, allowing for control over the physicochemical characteristics of fungal chitosan compared to chitosan from crustacean sources. Fungal sourced chitosan finds applications in food, pharmaceutical, and biomedical fields, serving as an antimicrobial agent, coating material, water purification agent, or bio-pesticide. This review focuses on the extraction of chitin from mushrooms or different fungal sources, as well as highlighting various applications of commercial chitosan products.

Novel study of using chitosan in gamma dose monitoring applications

Mohamad Bekhit et al.

Summary: This study explored the potential use of chitosan biopolymer in gamma dose monitoring. Chitosan films were irradiated to gamma rays and showed increased optical density at 298nm with increasing absorbed doses, as well as a color change from pale yellow to dense yellow. UV/Vis and FTIR analysis supported the use of chitosan film as a label-dosimeter in the range of 10-120 kGy.

Polyol and polyurethane foam from cellulose hydrolysate

Marzena Szpilyk et al.

Summary: A new polyol was successfully obtained from cellulose hydrolysate by reacting with glycidol and ethylene carbonate in the presence of potassium carbonate as catalyst. The polyol, containing hydroxyalkylated cellulose units, was suitable for synthesizing polyurethane foams with properties similar to industry-used rigid polyurethane foams. The foam displayed good thermal resistance and increased compression strength upon thermal exposure.
