Energy-Consumption-Based Life Cycle Assessment of Additive-Manufactured Product with Different Types of Materials

Osman Ulkir

Summary: Additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing technology is a preferred method for sustainability in fabrication, aiming to improve quality of life, develop the economy, and protect the environment. Life cycle assessment (LCA) was used to compare the environmental impacts of different materials in AM, and UV Resin was found to be the most environmentally friendly. ABS material was determined to have poor environmental performance. These results provide valuable information for decision-making in choosing environmentally friendly materials in AM.

Comprehensive investigation and prediction model for mechanical properties of coconut wood-polylactic acid composites filaments for FDM 3D printing

J. Kananathan et al.

Summary: Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is a practical 3D printing technology, while wood particles-based filament in 3D printing has advantages like thermal resistivity and biodegradable characteristics. Experimental results demonstrate that concentric and grid infill patterns at 75% infill percentage show the best mechanical properties, while octagram spiral infill pattern exhibits the weakest properties.

Determination of the Long-Term Thermal Performance of Foam Insulation Materials through Heat and Slicing Acceleration

Minjung Bae et al.

Summary: Foam insulation materials are widely used in the construction industry. This study evaluates the thermal performance of foam insulation materials used for exterior walls during the life cycle of a building. The results show that different materials have different aging rates, and slicing acceleration leads to a faster reduction in thermal resistance than aging at 70 degrees Celsius.

Infill Strategy in 3D Printed PLA Carbon Composites: Effect on Tensile Performance

Sofiane Guessasma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of infill strategy on the mechanical performance of PLA-carbon composites. The results show that the infill rate has a nonlinear effect on the density of composites, and the complexity of the generated pattern determines the magnitude of the effect. Additionally, different patterns of tensile loading result in varied deformation mechanisms.

Hygrothermal and Microstructural Investigation of PLA and PLA-Flax Printed Structures

Yassine Elias Belarbi et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to explore the manufacturing of insulation structures using fused filament deposition of biosourced materials. PLA and PLA-flax structures were printed with different infill density and printing temperatures. The thermal behavior and microstructure of PLA and PF were studied, and it was found that PF had slightly improved thermal insulation and hydrophobic behavior compared to PLA. The presence of flax fibers in PF contributed to better hygrothermal properties of the printed structures.

Effect of Printing Parameters on Mechanical Behaviour of PLA-Flax Printed Structures by Fused Deposition Modelling

Yassine Elias Belarbi et al.

Summary: The study reveals that PLA-flax composite has lower sensitivity to process parameters compared to PLA, with optimal load-bearing capabilities at filament crossing angles of -45/+45 degrees. However, the reinforcing effect of flax fiber is limited due to intra-filament porosity and fiber pull-out.
