Estimating the mechanical properties of Heat-Treated woods using Optimization Algorithms-Based ANN

Mehdi Nikoo et al.

Summary: This study used Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to investigate the Modulus of Rupture (MOR) and Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) of heat-treated wood. The ANN model (GWO-ANN) with different topologies and parameters was optimized using the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO). The accuracy of the GWO-ANN model was compared with other models, and it showed a higher accuracy with a coefficient of correlation (R2) of 0.975 and 0.960 for MOR and MOE respectively, and an Average Absolute Error (AAE) of 0.01 for both.

Variation of shear creep properties of wood within a stem: effects of macro- and microstructural variability

Kosei Ando et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structural factors that affect the shear creep characteristics of wood. The density of the wood, width of the annual rings, and microfibril angle (MFA) were found to be important factors. The shear modulus was widely distributed within the stem and was strongly influenced by the MFA and density. The shear creep compliance increased logarithmically regardless of the location within the stem, with MFA having a significant effect on the rate of increase.

Influence of Hydrothermal Treatment on Hemicellulose Structure in Cryptomeria japonica

Yoshikazu Mori et al.

Summary: The influence of hydrothermal treatment (HTT) on hemicellulose in Japanese cedar was studied using low temperatures (95°C and 120°C) for kiln drying. Although there were slight changes in the chemical structure of hemicellulose, the major chemical components and their quantities only showed minimal differences. However, the molecular chain-length composition of hemicellulose decreased significantly with an increase in HTT temperature, indicating degradation of the polymeric structure.

Physicomechanical properties of hydrothermally treated Japanese cedar timber and their relationships with chemical compositions

Jin-Wei Xu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the properties and composition of hydrothermally treated Japanese cedar timber. Results showed that dimensional stability increased with treatment temperature and duration, while flexural properties decreased, potentially limiting its use in structural applications. Physicomechanical properties were more correlated with hemicellulose and cellulose, highlighting the importance of polysaccharide degradation during hydrothermal treatment. Volume shrinkage and water absorption were more correlated with lignin than with hemicellulose and cellulose.

Physicomechanical properties and creep behavior of plywood composed of fully and partially heat-treated veneers

Fang-Yu Hsu et al.

Summary: This study found that the mechanical properties of heat-treated veneer plywood were not significantly different from untreated plywood, but the heat-treated plywood showed better creep resistance. The stepped isostress method (SSM) was successfully used to construct the creep master curves for plywood.

Temperature-Dependent Creep Behavior and Quasi-Static Mechanical Properties of Heat-Treated Wood

Dong Xing et al.

Summary: The effects of temperature-dependent quasi-static mechanical properties and creep deformation of heat-treated wood were studied using Berkovich depth-sensing indentation. High temperature heat treatment improved wood cell wall hardness and reduced creep rate. The Burgers model was found to be well suited for studying creep behavior of heat-treated wood cell walls at different temperatures.
