ZIF-filler incorporated mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for efficient gas separation: A review

Aniqa Imtiaz et al.

Summary: Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) combining polymeric and inorganic materials have emerged as a promising membrane material, offering dimensional stability, efficient gas separation ability, facile fabrication, and low cost. Zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) show good compatibility with polymers and beneficial properties, making them widely incorporated into polymer matrix for MMM fabrication. Modification techniques of ZIFs are discussed to enhance gas separation performance of MMMs, revealing potential to alter membrane structure and overcome trade-off effects.

Summary: A study introduced an efficient and less destructive method to cross-link MOFs/PI mixed matrix membranes, significantly improving membrane stability and mechanical strength under relatively mild conditions without destroying membrane structure. The resulting cross-linked membranes showed significantly enhanced CO2 antiplasticization pressure and gas permeability, while also improving gas separation performance.

Effect of incorporating different ZIF-8 crystal sizes in the polymer of intrinsic microporosity, PIM-1, for CO2/CH4 separation

Mohamed Yahia et al.

Summary: In this study, Zeolitic Imidazole Frameworks (ZIF-8) crystals of different sizes were synthesized and incorporated into the polymer of intrinsic microporosity, PIM-1, to form mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for effective CO2/CH4 separation. Characterization of MMMs showed that ZIF-8 crystal size greatly influenced gas transport properties, with membranes containing 120 nm ZIF-8 crystals showing the greatest improvement. Aging of the membranes resulted in increased selectivity and decreased permeability, indicating enhanced polymer packing and diffusivity selectivity.

Gas separation performance of MMMs containing (PIM-1)-functionalized GO derivatives

Jose Miguel Luque-Alled et al.

Summary: A strategy to reduce physical aging in PIM-1 membranes by incorporating novel functionalized graphene oxide (GO) fillers is reported. The best performance was achieved by a membrane containing 10 wt% of (PIM-1)-functionalized APTS-GO, maintaining 85% of the initial CO2 permeability after 150 days. This represents about nine-fold less CO2 permeability drop compared to pure PIM-1.

Is Porosity at the MOF/Polymer Interface Necessarily an Obstacle to Optimal Gas-Separation Performances in Mixed Matrix Membranes?

Dong Fan et al.

Summary: The study challenges the assumption that avoiding interfacial porosity is always necessary for high gas-separation performance in MOF/polymer mixed matrix membranes. By investigating the NUS-8/PIM-1 MMM, researchers found that microvoids at the interface can actually enhance CO2 interactions and improve selectivity, leading to a new solubility-driven separation mechanism. This discovery has the potential to change current paradigms and pave the way for more efficient gas separation membranes.
