Ion-Imprinted Polymeric Materials for Selective Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions from Aqueous Solution

Maria Marinela Lazar et al.

Summary: The introduction of ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) based on the molecular imprinting methodology has provided an innovative solution for the selective recognition of heavy metal ions (HMIs). Recent advances have demonstrated that IIPs exhibit higher selectivity coefficients, enabling various environmental applications such as extraction, monitoring, detection, and quantification of HMIs. This review critically analyzes relevant literature studies from the past decade, focusing on the selective removal of transition metal ions using IIPs. It discusses the chemical components, ion-imprinting technologies, characterization methods, synthesis parameters, adsorption performance, and solid phase extraction of heavy metal ions by different IIPs.

Synthesis and Characterization of a New Molecularly Imprinted Polymer for Selective Extraction of Mandelic Acid Metabolite from Human Urine as a Biomarker of Environmental and Occupational Exposures to Styrene

Murad. M. Qronfla et al.

Summary: 4-Vinylpyridine molecularly imprinted polymer (4-VPMIP) microparticles were synthesized for the selective solid-phase extraction of mandelic acid (MA) metabolite in human urine. The 4-VPMIP showed good recognition selectivity and enrichment abilities, as well as satisfactory recoveries for MA. The characterization results indicated that the 4-VPMIP had cavities and a rougher surface compared to the non-imprinted polymer (NIP).

Evaluation of Adsorption Efficiency on Pb(II) Ions Removal Using Alkali-Modified Hydrochar from Paulownia Leaves

Marija Koprivica et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) was used to convert Paulownia leaves (PL) into a carbonaceous sorbent for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solutions. Alkali activation using NaOH was performed to enhance the adsorption efficiency of the obtained hydrochar (PH). The results showed that the alkali treatment improved the adsorption performance of the hydrochar and the Langmuir isotherm model best described the experimental data.

Development of a novel tailored ion-imprinted polymer for recovery of lithium and strontium from reverse osmosis concentrated brine

Sara M. Alshuiael et al.

Summary: This study aims to prepare ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) that selectively adsorbs lithium (Li+) and attempts to remove strontium (Sr2+) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption processes were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). The seawater was characterized, and the physicochemical properties of the prepared IIP before and after adsorption were analyzed. The results showed that the IIP efficiently removed Li+ but not Sr2+, and followed Freundlich adsorption isotherms models. The seawater contained a significant concentration of minerals and low concentrations of trace metals, except for Li and Sr. pH 10 was found to be the optimum pH for Li+ and Sr2+ adsorption. The thermodynamics study revealed exothermic conditions for Li+ adsorption on the IIP. The adsorption capacity of Li+ increased with temperature. The IIP showed high efficiency in adsorbing Li+ and low efficiency in adsorbing Sr2+. The cost analysis for IIP preparation was $2 per gram.

Potential of desalination for lithium production in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Christopher Michael Fellows et al.

Summary: Despite the abundant lithium resources in the ocean, the economic competitiveness of oceanic lithium extraction is minimal compared to non-oceanic sources. Instead, more concentrated terrestrial brines and ore bodies are preferred. In the foreseeable future, hard-rock deposits and/or natural brines associated with geothermal formations in Saudi Arabia are expected to be more attractive sources of lithium.
