Improvements of adhesion strength of water-based epoxy resin on carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites via building surface roughness using modified silica particles

Meiqi Li et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve the adhesion strength of water-based epoxy coating on CFRP composites by using modified silica particles to create roughness on the CFRP surface. The effects of the modified particles on the coating's adhesion strength were analyzed through Pull-off adhesion test. The results showed that the introduction of modified silica particles increased the adhesive strength of the epoxy coating on CFRP by approximately 120%. Compared to traditional sanding treatments, this work provides a convenient and eco-friendly approach to achieve the required adhesion strength for water-based epoxy coating on CFRP without causing mechanical damage and dust pollution.

Adhesion to Untreated Polyethylene and Polypropylene by Needle-like Polyolefin Crystals

Yoshihiko Shiraki et al.

Summary: Polyolefins, the most widely used plastics globally, have poor adhesion due to the lack of polar groups, which poses challenges for recycling. In this study, a novel adhesion system using a polyurethane adhesive and an untreated polyolefin was described, where the interface is tightly bound by needle-like polyolefin crystals similar to nails adhering to wood. The polyurethane and polyolefin inter-diffuse at high temperatures, forming a mixed interfacial layer that recrystallizes upon cooling. Polyurethanes with optimally balanced non-polar and polar blocks exhibit superior adhesion due to their larger miscibility windows, polyolefin compatibilities, and the resulting long needle-like polyolefin crystals.

Advances in the Modification of Silane-Based Sol-Gel Coating to Improve the Corrosion Resistance of Magnesium Alloys

Jiao Li et al.

Summary: Magnesium (Mg) alloys, as the lightest structural materials, have significant applications in weight reduction, aerospace, military equipment, energy saving, and emission reduction. However, the poor corrosion resistance of Mg alloys limits their wide usage. The silane-based sol-gel coating technology has been widely used to improve corrosion resistance due to its simplicity, customizable composition and structure, and excellent performance. To enhance the protection against corrosion, the modification of sol-gel coatings has become a hot research topic. This review discusses the modification methods of silane-based sol-gels on Mg alloy surfaces, including bare sol-gel, nanoparticles, corrosion inhibitors, and sol-gel-based composite coatings, and explores their application, development, and research strategies.

Dual-functional linear and star POSS-containing organic-inorganic hybrid block copolymers: synthesis, self-assembly, and film property

Yanli Ma et al.

Summary: We report the synthesis of novel organic-inorganic hybrid block copolymers containing POSS through core-first ATRP method. The crosslinked copolymers form 3-dimensional networks and show different self-assembly behaviors and surface properties based on their chemical structures. The aggregates formed by the hybrid copolymers vary from spherical micelles to dendritic cylinders with increasing number of arms. The hydrophobic property of the hybrid copolymer films improves gradually from linear monobrachial copolymers to star six-arm copolymers. The adhesive performance evaluation indicates that copolymer with the highest density of branches has the best adhesive strength to the glass substrate.

A tale of two polyamides: Comparing the crystallization kinetics of a hot-melt adhesive and a PA 6/66 copolymer

Masoumeh Pourali et al.

Summary: This study investigates the isothermal and non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of two polyamides using Fast Scanning Calorimetry (FSC) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The results show that Technomelt PA 6910 crystallizes slower than PA 6/66 due to its lower density of hydrogen bonding. The lower glass transition temperature of Technomelt PA 6910 encourages room temperature crystallization. On the other hand, PA 6/66, a random copolymer, crystallizes faster due to a high density of hydrogen bonding and a sheet-like structure of the hydrogen bonding within the melt.
