A viscoelastic-viscoplastic constitutive model and its finite element implementation of amorphous polymers

Zhihong Liang et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of amorphous polymers from below to above glass transition temperature (Og) were described using a constitutive model based on the combination of multiple relaxation viscoelastic-viscoplastic model and the three-element viscoelastic model. The model successfully captured the strain-softening after yield as well as rate-dependent behaviors above and below Og, and also described the creep and relaxation behaviors of the material. The implemented model was able to reasonably predict the structural responses of amorphous polymers.

An investigation of the effect of relative humidity on viscoelastic properties of flax fiber reinforced polymer by fractional-order viscoelastic model

Bowen Xu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of environmental humidity on the viscoelastic properties of Flax Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FFRP) composites. Frequency sweep tests are conducted and results are analyzed using the Time-Temperature Superposition Principle (TTSP). The Huet-Sayegh viscoelastic model is introduced, with the fractional derivative applied for improved accuracy. It is observed that both storage modulus and loss modulus decrease with increasing relative humidity, although the loss factor does not show a consistent correlation. Overall, the energy storage and dissipation capacity of FFRP decrease due to moisture absorption, but the relationship between the reduction amounts is not specific.

Two-Level Scheme for Identification of the Relaxation Time Spectrum Using Stress Relaxation Test Data with the Optimal Choice of the Time-Scale Factor

Anna Stankiewicz

Summary: This paper focuses on the recovery of the relaxation time spectrum of linear viscoelastic material from discrete-time noise-corrupted measurements. A two-level identification scheme is proposed to find the optimal model and time-scale factor. The relaxation time spectrum is approximated by a series of power-exponential basis functions, resulting in compact analytical formulas for the relaxation modulus. Analysis on optimality conditions, approximation error, convergence, noise robustness, and model smoothness is carried out, and numerical experiments validate the model's applicability.

A Class of Algorithms for Recovery of Continuous Relaxation Spectrum from Stress Relaxation Test Data Using Orthonormal Functions

Anna Stankiewicz

Summary: The paper discusses the recovery of the relaxation spectrum of linear viscoelastic materials from discrete-time noise-corrupted measurements of relaxation modulus obtained in the stress relaxation test. A class of robust algorithms is proposed to approximate the continuous spectrum of relaxation frequencies, with a quadratic identification index adopted. Tikhonov regularization combined with generalized cross-validation is used to ensure the stability of the scheme, and the series expansions using different basis functions are studied as examples.

New perspective on the creep characteristic of fiber-dependent shape memory polymers: variable-order fractional constitutive model

Guo Shiru et al.

Summary: In order to better describe and explain the creep tensile property of shape memory polymers (SMPs), a novel variable-order fractional creep constitutive model with fewer parameters and good simulation performance was proposed. By utilizing a Hookean spring and a Newtonian dashpot in series, the model provided a more accurate description of the complex viscoelastic relationship of SMPs. The experimental results showed satisfactory agreement with the theoretical predictions, indicating the effectiveness of the developed model.

Linear viscoelastic behavior of bimodal polyethylene

Shadrach Kwakye-Nimo et al.

Summary: The relaxation mechanisms of a polymer melt can be observed through rheological characterization in the linear viscoelastic region. The relaxation spectrum reveals linear viscoelastic behaviors that cannot be directly observed from experimental data such as creep compliance. This study investigates molten polyethylenes with broad bimodal molecular weight distributions and combines small amplitude oscillatory shear and creep experiments to obtain information at different time scales. The results show that the zero-shear viscosity does not follow a simple power law relationship, but after considering the influence of the molecular weight distribution, it exhibits the expected power-law dependency on Mw for linear polyethylene. The crossover modulus is found to depend on the amplitude ratio of the peaks in the MWD and the weight fraction of the high molecular weight fraction. The polydispersity of the relaxation spectra correlates with shape features of MWD, such as the peak separation and M-z/M-w. This indicates that MWD shape properties can be used to create empirical relationships with LVE constants and the relaxation spectrum.

An improved method to establish continuous relaxation spectrum of asphalt materials

Lei Xi et al.

Summary: This study developed an improved method to determine the continuous relaxation spectrum of asphalt materials, demonstrating compliance with LVE theory and physical causality. The generated relaxation spectrum was accurate enough to compare the storage modulus and loss modulus values recalculated by the relaxation spectrum with those predicted by master curve models, highlighting the limitations of the Kramers-Kronig relation for establishing the relaxation spectrum of asphalt materials. Additionally, the generated relaxation spectrum was utilized to construct the relaxation modulus of mixtures and to develop the stiffness modulus of binders, both consistent with LVE theory and physical causality.

Summary: The relaxation spectrum of unentangled polymer solution is derived using the self-similarity approach, but this method does not work for entangled polymeric fluids. This paper confirms the universality of the exponent in the polymer melt spectrum by employing a new regression algorithm.

Akio Ishii

Summary: Through molecular dynamics simulations and calculations, we confirmed the time dependency of stress relaxation in metallic glass conforms with the KWW equation and discussed the temperature dependency of the Kohlrausch exponent beta(Kww) at different temperatures. We also investigated the influence of local plastic deformation on stress relaxation.
