Biodegradable Polylactic Acid-Polyhydroxyalkanoate-Based Nanocomposites with Bio-Hydroxyapatite: Preparation and Characterization

Preeyaporn Injorhor et al.

Summary: Biodegradable polymers have important applications in medicine, particularly in internal devices, due to their ability to be broken down and absorbed into the body without producing harmful degradation products. In this study, biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA)-polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA)-based nanocomposites with various PHA and nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) contents were prepared using solution casting method. The mechanical properties, microstructure, thermal stability, thermal properties, and in vitro degradation of the PLA-PHA-based composites were investigated. PLA-20PHA/5nHAp showed the desired properties and was successfully fabricated into fibers using electrospinning.

Expanding Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) Applications: A Review on Modifications and Effects

Ahmed Z. Naser et al.

Summary: Due to the high price of petroleum, overconsumption of plastic products, recent climate change regulations, lack of landfill spaces, and increasing population, sustainable biodegradable solutions are being introduced for a greener environment. Biodegradable biobased polymers such as PLA and PHAs have gained attention as environmentally friendly alternatives to petroleum-based plastics, despite limitations in flexibility and impact resistance. Advances in modification methods show potential for overcoming these limitations, expanding the applications of both polymers in various fields such as food packaging, surgical implants, and biomedical applications.

Catalytic fast pyrolysis of beech wood lignin isolated by different biomass (pre)treatment processes: Organosolv, hydrothermal and enzymatic hydrolysis

A. G. Margellou et al.

Summary: The study explores the thermal and catalytic fast pyrolysis of three types of lignin derived from the same biomass but with different isolation processes. The results show that mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites exhibit higher dealkoxylation reactivity compared to microporous ZSM-5, leading to higher concentrations of BTX aromatics without a significant increase in PAHs. The observed variations in the characteristics of the lignin types did not result in substantial differentiation in the thermal and catalytic fast pyrolysis product yields and composition.

Chih-Hao Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, core-sheath nanofiber membranes (CSNFMs) with silver nanoparticles embedding in the polylactic acid nanofiber sheath and hyaluronic acid in the nanofiber core were prepared. The CSNFMs functioned as barrier membranes to reduce fibroblast penetration without hampering nutrient transports to prevent post-operative peritendinous adhesion. The CSNFM with thin-sheath and Ag NPs showed antibacterial activity with low cytotoxicity and exhibited the highest efficacy in reducing fibroblast attachment in vitro.
