Molecularly Imprinted Polymer-Based Sensors for Protein Detection

Semra Akgonullu et al.

Summary: The accurate detection of biological substances such as proteins has always been a hot topic in scientific research. Biomimetic sensors seek to imitate sensitive and selective mechanisms of biological systems and integrate these traits into applicable sensing platforms. Molecular imprinting technology has been extensively practiced in many domains, producing molecular recognition materials with specific capabilities. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), also known as plastic antibodies, are artificial receptors with high-affinity binding sites for a particular molecule or compound. MIPs for protein recognition are expected to have high affinity through interactions between polymer matrices and functional groups of the target protein. This critical review discusses recent advances in the synthesis, characterization, and application of MIP-based sensor platforms for protein detection.

Synthesis and Characterization of a New Molecularly Imprinted Polymer for Selective Extraction of Mandelic Acid Metabolite from Human Urine as a Biomarker of Environmental and Occupational Exposures to Styrene

Murad. M. Qronfla et al.

Summary: 4-Vinylpyridine molecularly imprinted polymer (4-VPMIP) microparticles were synthesized for the selective solid-phase extraction of mandelic acid (MA) metabolite in human urine. The 4-VPMIP showed good recognition selectivity and enrichment abilities, as well as satisfactory recoveries for MA. The characterization results indicated that the 4-VPMIP had cavities and a rougher surface compared to the non-imprinted polymer (NIP).

Multi-templates molecularly imprinted polymers for simultaneous recognition of multiple targets: From academy to application

Shenling Wang et al.

Summary: Multiplex application is a major trend in analytical chemistry, and multi-templates molecularly imprinted polymers (mt-MIPs) have gained high interest as promising materials for selective recognition. Based on the ability to generate multiple types of recognition sites, mt-MIPs offer great potential for simultaneous identification, enrichment, and multiplex detection. This article discusses the preparation strategies of mt-MIPs and highlights their recent applications in sample pretreatment, sensors, contaminant removal, drug delivery, and commercial products. Finally, the current challenges and future trends of mt-MIPs are also discussed.
