Mesoscale Simulation Based on the Dynamic Mean-Field Density Functional Method on Block-Copolymeric Ionomers for Polymer Electrolyte Membranes

Hoseong Kang et al.

Summary: In this study, a mesoscale simulation based on the dynamic mean-field density functional method was used to investigate the morphology of sulfonated block copolymers for polymer electrolyte membranes in fuel cells. The results showed that the model with a higher sulfonation degree of sulfonated monomers exhibited better phase separation and water channel formation compared to other models.

Effect of temperature, rate, and molecular weight on the failure behavior of soft block copoly(ether-ester) thermoplastic elastomers

Simone Sbrescia et al.

Summary: In this study, the failure behavior of TPEEs based on model block copolymers was evaluated over a wide range of temperatures, deformation rates, and molecular weights. Small changes in temperature or rate led to a sharp transition in the material's mechanical response. Digital Image Correlation was used to measure stress distribution changes and the viscoelasticity and strain-dependent morphology of TPEs were considered to explain the rate-dependent behavior.

Bioplastics for a circular economy

Jan-Georg Rosenboom et al.

Summary: Bioplastics have the potential to contribute to a more sustainable and circular economy by reducing carbon footprint and offering advantageous material properties. However, they also face challenges such as negative agricultural impacts, competition with food production, unclear end-of-life management, and higher costs. Emerging chemical and biological methods can enable the upcycling of plastic waste into higher-quality materials. Standardization and guidelines are needed to guide purchasing choices, and clear regulations and financial incentives are essential for the large-scale adoption of bioplastics in a truly sustainable manner.

Biobased vitrimers: Towards sustainable and adaptable performing polymer materials

Matteo Andrea Lucherelli et al.

Summary: Covalent Adaptable Networks (CAN) are innovative polymers that bridge the gap between thermoplastics and thermosets by utilizing dynamic covalent chemistry. Vitrimers, a type of CAN, are crosslinked polymers in which the covalent linkages can be redistributed within the network upon heating thanks to associative exchange reactions, while maintaining the network integrity.

Highly Active Heterogeneous Double Metal Cyanide Catalysts for Ring-Opening Polymerization of Cyclic Monomers

Chinh-Hoang Tran et al.

Summary: A series of heterogeneous Zn-Co double metal cyanide (DMC) catalysts were investigated for ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of various cyclic monomers. It was found that inexpensive and commonly used organic solvents were effective complexing agents for the preparation of DMC catalysts, which showed high catalytic activity for the ROP of propylene oxide, epsilon-caprolactone, and delta-valerolactone. The chemical structures and compositions of the catalysts were determined using various techniques, and alpha, omega-hydroxyl-functionalized polyether and polyester polyols with high yields and tunable molecular weights were successfully synthesized in the presence of different initiators. Kinetic studies of the ROP of delta-valerolactone were also conducted to confirm the reaction mechanism.

Sustainable recycling technologies for thermoplastic polymers and their composites: A review of the state of the art

Praveenkumara Jagadeesh et al.

Summary: This review article discusses the environmental and economic effects of recycling and sustainable thermoplastic polymer recycling technologies. Recycled thermoplastics have been utilized as matrices in the production of various composites, which are widely used in food and packaging, construction and building, transportation, and indoor applications. The desirable properties of thermoplastic polymers have led to their extensive use in place of metals, but increased landfilling and incineration of plastics have negative impacts on the ecosystem. In response to these problems, many countries are adopting the circular economy concept to promote reuse and recycling of materials.

Sustainable Thermosets and Composites Based on the Epoxides of Norbornylized Seed Oils and Biomass Fillers

Jomin Thomas et al.

Summary: In this study, thermosets and composites were fabricated from the epoxides of norbornane seed oils and lignocellulosic sorghum-derived biomass fillers were added. The curing behavior, T-g, crosslinking efficiency, and thermal stability of the thermosets were characterized. The addition of biomass fillers increased the bio-based content and improved the properties of the composites. Furthermore, the use of torrefied and carbonized sorghum filler variants enhanced the performance of the composites. SEM images showed good interfacial adhesion between the polymer matrix, fillers, and fiber phase. These fabricated composites demonstrate the potential for being sustainable, greener, and lightweight.

Effect of α-, β-, γ-, and δ-dicarbonyl complexing agents on the double metal cyanide-catalyzed ring-opening polymerization of propylene oxide

Chinh Hoang Tran et al.

Summary: Using dicarbonyl compounds as complexing agents for Zn(II)-Co(III) DMC catalysts in the ring-opening polymerization of epoxides can lead to higher yields and lower unsaturation levels in the resulting polyols. The ability to tune the catalytic behavior with these new complexing agents offers great potential for the synthesis of high quality polyols.

Hardness Modulated Thermoplastic Poly(ether ester) Elastomers for the Automobile Weather-Strip Application

Su Hyeon Jeon et al.

Summary: A series of poly(ether ester) elastomers are synthesized to develop new materials for automobile weather-stripping and seal parts, replacing conventional rubbers. Hardness can be modulated by controlling chain extender composition and the ratio of hard to soft segments, while crystallinity and phase separation behavior can also be tuned accordingly.
