Heterogeneous distribution of sex ratio distorters in natural populations of the isopod Armadillidium vulgare

Sylvine Durand et al.

Summary: We investigated the distribution and population dynamics of feminizing sex ratio distorters (SRD) in the isopod Armadillidium vulgare. Our results showed variable frequencies of SRD in populations, with the f element being more frequent than Wolbachia. We also found evidence of linkage between Wolbachia strains and mitochondrial haplotypes.

Generalist parasites persist in degraded environments: a lesson learned from microsporidian diversity in amphipods

Sebastian Prati et al.

Summary: The present study provides new insight into suitable microsporidian-host associations, relating host specialization in microsporidians infecting amphipods to degraded and recovering habitats across German river catchments. It offers a unique opportunity to understand the persistence of parasites following human disturbance and their establishment in restored rivers.

Comparing the Efficiency of Single-Locus Species Delimitation Methods within Trochoidea (Gastropoda: Vetigastropoda)

Bingyu Guo et al.

Summary: In the context of diminishing global biodiversity, this study examines the validity and practicality of species delimitation methods for identifying neglected and undescribed biodiverse species. The results suggest that distance-based methods are generally superior to tree-based methods, with the ASAP method being the most efficient. In terms of phylogenetic methods, the single threshold version of GMYC performs better and PTP shows higher efficiency in delimiting species. Additionally, GMYC is significantly influenced by taxonomic rank, performing poorly at the genus level.

ASAP: assemble species by automatic partitioning

Nicolas Puillandre et al.

Summary: ASAP is a fast and efficient method for constructing species partitions from single locus sequence alignments. It offers a new scoring system without prior biological insight, and can be used through a graphical web interface or downloaded for local usage.

Fuzzy species borders of glacial survivalists in the Carpathian biodiversity hotspot revealed using a multimarker approach

Tomasz Mamos et al.

Summary: The Carpathians are a key biodiversity hotspot in Europe, with hidden new species discovered through diversity and phylogenetic studies during the Pleistocene era. The research shows the significant impact of Pleistocene glaciations on speciation, supported by evidence of multiple micro refugia and increased diversification rates.

Revisiting the phylogeny of microsporidia

Eunji Park et al.

Summary: Canonical microsporidians are a diverse group of obligate intracellular parasites related to fungi. Their classification is challenging due to morphological homoplasy and accelerated evolutionary rates. Further revision and targeted studies are needed to understand the evolutionary history of these interesting intracellular parasites.

Comparative Genomics of Strictly Vertically Transmitted, Feminizing Microsporidia Endosymbionts of Amphipod Crustaceans

Alexandre Cormier et al.

Summary: The study reports sequencing and analysis of three strictly vertically transmitted microsporidia species with feminization induction ability in amphipod crustaceans. These feminizing microsporidia, unlike horizontally transmitted ones, cannot easily be isolated, so a computational strategy was used to cosequence symbiont and host genomic DNA. Genomic comparison with feminizing Wolbachia in isopod crustaceans shows independent evolution of feminization in microsporidia and Wolbachia at the molecular genetic level.

MEGA11 Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis Version 11

Koichiro Tamura et al.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
