The genetic basis and adult reproductive consequences of developmental thermal plasticity

Leonor R. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: Increasing temperature and thermal variability have profound effects on populations, especially on reproductive traits. Developmental thermal plasticity affects adult reproductive traits in Drosophila melanogaster, with significant genetic basis related to genes affecting reproduction, stress responses, and autophagy.

Cecropins contribute to Drosophila host defense against a subset of fungal and Gram-negative bacterial infection

Alexia L. Carboni et al.

Summary: Cecropins are small helical secreted peptides with antimicrobial activity that play an important role in host defense. Experimental studies have shown that Cecropins play a role in defense against Gram-negative bacteria and fungi in fruit flies.

Natural genetic variation in Drosophila melanogaster reveals genes associated with Coxiella burnetii infection

Rosa M. Guzman et al.

Summary: The study identified several candidate genes associated with infection of the human pathogen C. burnetii, with some involved in known immune response signaling pathways. Additionally, some genes not previously associated with C. burnetii pathogenesis were discovered to play roles in bacterial infection and synaptic signaling.

Mark G. Sterken et al.

Summary: Using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model organism, this study dissected the genetic architecture of Orsay virus infection and identified two loci on chromosome IV associated with susceptibility. Additionally, it was found that other genetic elements may also influence viral infection susceptibility.

Mapping the human genetic architecture of COVID-19

Mari E. K. Niemi et al.

Summary: The genetic make-up of an individual plays a role in susceptibility and response to viral infections. A global network of researchers identified 13 significant genetic loci associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe COVID-19 cases. Mendelian randomization analyses suggest a causal role for smoking and body-mass index in severe COVID-19. Collaboration among human genetics researchers has allowed for the discovery of novel host genetic factors linked to COVID-19.

The molecular architecture of Drosophila melanogaster defense against Beauveria bassiana explored through evolve and resequence and quantitative trait locus mapping

Parvin Shahrestani et al.

Summary: The genetic architecture of antifungal immunity in natural populations is complex and influenced by factors such as host genotype and pathogen type in Drosophila melanogaster. The study reveals adaptive cross resistance in fruit flies by enhancing defense against fungi. Both QTL mapping and E&R experiments generated lists of potentially causal candidate genes, but the results were non-overlapping.

The molecular architecture of Drosophila melanogaster defense against Beauveria bassiana explored through evolve and resequence and quantitative trait locus mapping

Parvin Shahrestani et al.

Summary: The genetic architecture of antifungal immunity in natural populations is poorly understood. Population genetic approaches, including QTL mapping and evolve and resequence methods, were used to explore D. melanogaster immune defense against Beauveria bassiana. Results showed high variability in immune defense, with significant improvement in survivorship over generations and cross-resistance to a second B. bassiana strain after selection for increased defense. Both sexual dimorphism in defense and the specific pathogen exposure were found to influence immune defense.
