Yibeltal Aschale et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the efficacy and re-infection rate of albendazole among pregnant women. It found that the cure rate of single-dose albendazole was 81.7%, but the re-infection rate of hookworm 18-24 weeks post-treatment was substantial at 21.4%. Summary: Trichuriasis is a neglected tropical disease affecting the poorest populations. Researchers are developing a vaccine composed of Tm-WAP49 protein to be delivered through intranasal immunization. Preliminary results in a mouse model showed high levels of antibody response and significant reduction in worm burden. The addition of adjuvants further improved the vaccine efficacy, inducing robust cellular responses and long-term T cell memory.

Tissue-specific immunity in helminth infections

Francesco Vacca et al.

Summary: Host responses to helminth infections involve Type 2 immune responses that are crucial for immunity, tissue repair, and parasite tolerance. These responses are also observed in the tissue-associated immune-pathologies of asthma, atopic dermatitis, and allergies. Recent discoveries of new immune cells and cytokine pathways offer insights into tissue specific immunity against helminths and how the host accommodates their presence.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) and associated risk factors among schoolchildren around Lake Tana. The results showed that STH infection was common among the students, with hookworm infection being the most prevalent. Lack of shoe wearing habit, lack of knowledge on prevention and control methods, engagement in irrigation activities, lack of toilet, playing on soils, lack of fingernail trimming habit, and male gender were significant factors associated with STH infection among schoolchildren.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths (SIH) infections in prenatal mothers in two states in India. The results showed that the prevalence of STH was higher in rural areas compared to urban areas, with Ascaris lumbricoides being the most common infection. Age, walking barefoot, and weight gain during pregnancy were significantly associated with STH infections. Pregnant women with STH had lower mean hemoglobin values and less average weight gain during pregnancy compared to those without STH.

SARS-CoV-2 and helminth co-infections, and environmental pollution exposure: An epidemiological and immunological perspective

Pragalathan Naidoo et al.

Summary: Soil-transmitted helminths infect billions globally, with poor environmental sanitation and pollution exacerbating the hyper-inflammatory immune response to SARS-CoV-2. Helminth-induced Th2/Th3 immune response may protect against lung damage but could be hindered by air pollutants overexpressing ACE2 receptors. Further studies are needed to understand the complex interactions between helminths, air pollution, and SARS-CoV-2.

Summary: The review found high prevalence of malaria-helminth co-infections in children in endemic countries. Risk of Plasmodium infection was lower in children co-infected with Schistosoma or soil transmitted helminths, but the risk of anaemia was higher in children with dual infections. Understanding the epidemiology of co-infections is crucial for implementing effective interventions in low and middle-income countries.

The Influence of Helminth Immune Regulation on COVID-19 Clinical Outcomes: Is it Beneficial or Detrimental?

Summary: Chronic worm infections skew the host immune response towards a Th2 type, weakening immune responses. The regulatory response initiated by helminth infections can impact responses to nonhelminth antigens, including viral infections, altering the clinical outcomes. The interaction between COVID-19 and helminth co-infections may have more hidden outcomes than predictable ones.

Soil-transmitted helminth infection, anemia, and malnutrition among preschool-age children in Nangapanda subdistrict, Indonesia

Yenny Djuardi et al.

Summary: This study revealed that preschool-age children in Nangapanda subdistrict in Indonesia are commonly affected by soil-transmitted helminth infections, malnutrition, and anemia. Younger children are more susceptible to stunting and anemia, while current single and mild STH infections are independently associated with a lower risk of anemia. Despite the high prevalence of these conditions, the negative impact of STH infections on children's health in this region seems to be minimal, highlighting the need for further research and intervention to improve the children's health and wellbeing.
