The impact of varying the number and selection of conditions on estimated multimorbidity prevalence: A cross-sectional study using a large, primary care population dataset

Clare MacRae et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the significant impact of varying the conditions considered when measuring multimorbidity prevalence. There is a need for standardization in order to facilitate comparability across studies and accurately represent different population subgroups.

Prevalence and demographic variation of cardiovascular, renal, metabolic, and mental health conditions in 12 million english primary care records

Jennifer Cooper et al.

Summary: This study analyzed a large primary care database in England to investigate the prevalence and socio-demographic variation of cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic (CRM) conditions and mental health (MH) conditions. The study found variations in prevalence by sex and ethnicity, suggesting potential differences in clinical presentation and practice. It also highlighted the underrepresentation of undiagnosed conditions, particularly in mental health, in primary care data.

Inequalities in developing multimorbidity over time: A population-based cohort study from an urban, multi-ethnic borough in the United Kingdom

Alessandra Bisquera et al.

Summary: The study found that social deprivation, gender, ethnicity, and other factors are associated with the transition of chronic diseases and the duration of healthy states. Substance abuse is identified as the strongest risk factor for multimorbidity. Musculoskeletal disorders, morbid obesity, and substance abuse are common entry points to the trajectories of multimorbidity.

Impact of multimorbidity on healthcare costs and utilisation: a systematic review of the UK literature

Marina Soley-Bori et al.

Summary: Managing multimorbidity is complex for both patients and healthcare systems. In the UK, multimorbidity increases healthcare utilisation and costs of primary, secondary, and dental care. Further research is needed to explore the efficiency of integrated care schemes for multimorbidity.

NHS Health Checks: an observational study of equity and outcomes 2009-2017

John Robson et al.

Summary: The NHS Health Check programme has been running for 10 years, with low uptake rates and attendees more likely to be diagnosed with conditions like hypertension and diabetes. Attendees were also more likely to receive treatment, such as statins and antihypertensive medicines, but the majority did not receive any treatment or referral. Less than 10% of those eligible for statins were actually prescribed them, indicating a need for targeted strategies for those at highest risk of cardiovascular disease.

Studying trajectories of multimorbidity: a systematic scoping review of longitudinal approaches and evidence

Genevieve Cezard et al.

Summary: The study reviewed longitudinal studies investigating multimorbidity trajectories, predominantly from high-income countries in the Global North over the past decade. Various longitudinal approaches were used, including change variables, multilevel regression analysis, group-based methodologies, disease transitions, and visualization techniques. Common risk factors for multimorbidity included older age, higher socioeconomic deprivation, overweight, and poor health behaviors.

Building back fairer in Greater Manchester and the country

Michael Marmot

Summary: The analyses pointed out that health issues in England are more pronounced in the Northwest region, with higher COVID-19 mortality rates and greater inequalities. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid reverting to the pre-pandemic status quo and focus on addressing social, environmental, and economic inequalities to improve the health and well-being of individuals.

Time trends in the incidence of clinically diagnosed type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes in the UK 2009-2018: a retrospective cohort study

Kingshuk Pal et al.

Summary: The study found that the incidence rate of new clinical diagnoses of type 2 diabetes decreased by a third from its peak in 2013-2014, while the incidence of pre-diabetes tripled in the UK primary care database between 2009 and 2018. Further exploration is needed to understand the implications of these trends on timely treatment, complication rates, and mortality.

Lifestyle, cardiometabolic disease, and multimorbidity in a prospective Chinese study

Yuting Han et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the differential impacts of lifestyle factors on transitions from healthy to FCMD, to CMM, and subsequently to death. Findings showed that high-risk lifestyle factors played crucial but different roles in these transitions and emphasized the importance of integrating comprehensive lifestyle interventions into both health and CMD management.

Identifying longitudinal clusters of multimorbidity in an urban setting: A population-based cross-sectional study

Alessandra Bisquera et al.

Summary: This study identified five consistent clusters of associative multimorbidity in an urban setting, including anxiety and depression, heart failure, diabetes, and chronic liver disease. The results suggest that mental health problems, pain, and at-risk behaviors leading to cardiovascular diseases are important in this young urban population.
