Estimating incidence rates of periprosthetic joint infection after hip and knee arthroplasty for osteoarthritis using linked registry and administrative health data

X. Jin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the rates of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) 90 days after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA). The study used data from Australia and found that the rates of PJI were relatively high. The study also suggested that using combined hospital administrative databases could be an alternative way to monitor PJI rates.

Summary: High BMI, DM, AVN, femoral neck fracture, RA, CVD, CPD, neurological disease, opioid use, and IDA are individual-related risk factors for PJI after primary THA; female gender, dysplasia/dislocation, and OA are protective factors.

Higher age, female gender, osteoarthritis and blood transfusion protect against periprosthetic joint infection in total hip or knee arthroplasties: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Vera Alice Correia Resende et al.

Summary: The main risk factors for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) identified in this study were male gender, coagulopathy, alcohol abuse, surgical site infection (highest score), and high NNIS system surgical patient index score. Protective factors included age, female gender in total knee arthroplasty, osteoarthritis, and blood transfusion.
