Interactive stratospheric aerosol models' response to different amounts and altitudes of SO2 injection during the 1991 Pinatubo eruption

Ilaria Quaglia et al.

Summary: This study compares the simulation results of six global models with observational data on the stratospheric aerosol cloud following the 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption. The results show consistent agreement in the rapid reduction of sulfate mass burden in the tropical stratosphere and transport towards the extratropics in the Northern Hemisphere. However, the models overestimate the initial sulfate burden and produce higher surface area density compared to observations.

An evaluation of tropical waves and wave forcing of the QBO in the QBOi models

Laura A. Holt et al.

Summary: We analyzed stratospheric waves in models participating in the QBOi project and found that the models perform better than most CMIP5 models. The variability in equatorial waves among the QBOi models can be attributed to varying resolutions, biases in zonal winds, and differences in convectively coupled waves. Models with stronger convectively coupled waves tend to produce larger forcing in the QBO region. There is also a large spread in the resolved wave forcing and a correlation with model vertical resolution.

On the stratospheric chemistry of midlatitude wildfire smoke

Susan Solomon et al.

Summary: In the 2019/20 austral summer, Australian wildfires emitted smoke into the stratosphere, leading to increased optical extinction in the midlatitudes of the southern hemisphere. The smoke, coated with sulfuric acid and water, caused a decrease in reactive nitrogen concentrations and had an impact on chlorine and reactive hydrogen species, potentially depleting the ozone layer. These findings suggest that if wildfire smoke injection into the stratosphere increases as the world warms, ozone recovery could be impeded.

LGM Paleoclimate Constraints Inform Cloud Parameterizations and Equilibrium Climate Sensitivity in CESM2

Jiang Zhu et al.

Summary: This study examines the role of cloud parameterizations in simulating the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) cooling in the Community Earth System Model version 2 (CESM2). It attributes the excessive LGM cooling to the new CESM2 schemes of cloud microphysics and ice nucleation. By removing certain cloud ice number limiters and reducing the time-step size in cloud microphysics, the excessive cooling can be eliminated. Based on these findings, a paleoclimate-calibrated CESM2 (PaleoCalibr) has been developed, which simulates well the observed twentieth century warming and cloud-climate variables. PaleoCalibr demonstrates a lower climate sensitivity and weaker aerosol-cloud interaction compared to CESM2. This study underscores the importance of paleoclimate constraints in improving cloud parameterizations and climate projections.

Stratospheric ozone response to sulfate aerosol and solar dimming climate interventions based on the G6 Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP) simulations

Simone Tilmes et al.

Summary: This study assesses the impacts of stratospheric aerosol intervention (SAI) and solar dimming on stratospheric ozone and identifies differences in their effects. These differences are partly attributed to variations and limitations in aerosol microphysics, chemistry, and ozone photolysis in the models.

An interactive stratospheric aerosol model intercomparison of solar geoengineering by stratospheric injection of SO2 or accumulation-mode sulfuric acid aerosols

Debra K. Weisenstein et al.

Summary: This article reports the first multi-model intercomparison study on the injection of AM-H2SO4 to modify the particle size distribution in the stratosphere. The study evaluates the effectiveness of this approach in reducing the side effects of sulfuric acid aerosol geoengineering. The findings show that AM-H2SO4 injection can increase the radiative efficacy compared to SO2 injection. Additionally, the study reveals that the form and distribution of injected sulfur have an impact on the evolution of particle sizes.

Limitations of assuming internal mixing between different aerosol species: a case study with sulfate geoengineering simulations

Daniele Visioni et al.

Summary: Simulating complex aerosol microphysical processes in Earth system models can be computationally intensive. Many models use a modal approach which simplifies aerosol size distributions and assumes internal mixing between different aerosol species. While this approach generally yields satisfactory results, there are cases where the simplifications may lead to incorrect answers. This study shows specific conditions under which the current approximations used in some modal approaches may be inaccurate.

Sudden Stratospheric Warmings

Mark P. Baldwin et al.

Summary: Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) are impressive fluid dynamical events characterized by large and rapid temperature increases in the winter polar stratosphere, which are usually caused by the breaking of planetary-scale waves propagating upwards from the troposphere. SSWs result in the breakdown of the polar vortex, along with rapid descent and warming of air in polar latitudes, affecting tropospheric weather and potentially leading to cold air outbreaks over North America and Eurasia.

Sensitivity of Total Column Ozone to Stratospheric Sulfur Injection Strategies

S. Tilmes et al.

Summary: The study explores the impact of various stratospheric sulfur injection strategies on total column ozone, finding differences in ozone hole depth and recovery time based on the injection method. Additionally, it suggests that TCO in mid to high latitudes may increase over time due to both greenhouse gas emissions and sulfur injections.

Predictability of the Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere During Major Sudden Stratospheric Warmings

N. M. Pedatella et al.

Summary: The study shows that CESM2(WACCM6) hindcasts can accurately predict the changes in the middle atmosphere and lower thermosphere during SSWs, but underestimate the strength of the SSW. The ability to predict changes such as mesosphere cooling and enhanced semidiurnal tide during SSWs indicates potential for improved multi-day space weather forecasting.

Climate change modulates the stratospheric volcanic sulfate aerosol lifecycle and radiative forcing from tropical eruptions

Thomas J. Aubry et al.

Summary: Climate change amplifies the forcing of large-magnitude tropical eruptions but reduces the forcing of moderate-magnitude tropical eruptions. In a high-end warming scenario, the stratospheric aerosol optical depth perturbation from frequent moderate-magnitude tropical eruptions will be reduced, while global-mean radiative forcing, stratospheric warming, and surface cooling from infrequent large-magnitude tropical eruptions will be exacerbated.

Stratospheric Ozone and Climate Forcing Sensitivity to Cruise Altitudes for Fleets of Potential Supersonic Transport Aircraft

Jun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the potential atmospheric response of a fleet of supersonic aircraft fully operational in 2050 through sensitivity experiments at possible future cruise altitudes. Results show that the impact on stratospheric ozone and climate radiative forcing strongly depends on cruise altitude, with higher altitudes showing larger effects. It is suggested that mitigating impacts on stratospheric ozone can be achieved by flying at lower cruise altitudes or developing low NOx emitting combustors. This study can contribute to technological development and optimize aircraft operations for environmentally friendly supersonic travel.

Effects of enhanced downwelling of NOx on Antarctic upper-stratospheric ozone in the 21st century

Ville Maliniemi et al.

Summary: Research suggests that by the end of the 21st century, ozone levels in the equatorial upper stratosphere may be slightly higher in scenarios with higher greenhouse gas emissions, while polar ozone levels could exceed pre-CFC era levels. However, in the Antarctic upper stratosphere, ozone levels in different scenarios are similar during winter and do not surpass pre-CFC levels. This is attributed to the fast descent of excess nitrogen oxides in stronger greenhouse gas emission scenarios, indicating the significance of thermospheric/upper mesospheric NOx in the future evolution of Antarctic ozone and its impact on preventing a super recovery of ozone in the upper stratosphere.
