The Mediating Effect of E-Cigarette Harm Perception in the Relationship between E-Cigarette Advertising Exposure and E-Cigarette Use

Summary: Exposure to e-cigarette advertising is associated with increased e-cigarette use among young people, and this relationship is mediated by the perception of e-cigarette harm. Decreasing the perception that e-cigarettes are less harmful than cigarettes is crucial in preventing youth e-cigarette use.

Online E-Cigarette Information Exposure and Its Association with E-Cigarette Use among Adolescents in Shanghai, China

Summary: This study assessed online e-cigarette information exposure and found a significant association between online information exposure and intention to use e-cigarettes among adolescents in Shanghai, China. The internet was the primary source of e-cigarette information. Students with friends using e-cigarettes were more likely to be interested in e-cigarettes, while smokers and females were more likely to be exposed to e-cigarette information via social media and websites.

Tobacco retailers around schools in 10 cities across China

Summary: This study investigated the availability of tobacco products at retailers near junior, senior, and vocational high schools in rural and urban areas across 10 cities in China. The findings showed that a significant number of cigarette retailers were located within a short distance from schools, both in urban and rural areas. Most of these retailers displayed tobacco products and a considerable proportion sold flavored cigarettes, particularly menthol/mint-flavored ones. Compliance with regulations prohibiting sales to minors was low. The study suggests the need for effective enforcement of tobacco retailer restrictions near schools and stronger regulations on tobacco displays and flavored cigarettes and e-cigarettes to protect youth in China.

Exploring arts-based interventions for youth substance use prevention: a scoping review of literature

Summary: There is a rise in problematic substance use among Canadian youth, which is leading to a public health crisis. Arts-based interventions can empower young people to actively participate in substance use prevention and promote health, reduce harm, and change behaviors. This scoping review explores various arts-based interventions for substance use prevention among youth and finds that these interventions can increase knowledge, change attitudes and practices on substance use.

The association of adolescent e-cigarette harm perception to advertising exposure and marketing type

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between adolescent e-cigarette harm perception and five types of e-cigarette advertising exposures. The findings suggest that e-cigarette advertising influences adolescent perceptions of harm, particularly for social media and newspaper advertisements. However, adjusting for covariates such as environmental support and exposure to anti-tobacco marketing weakens the association between advertising and harm perception.

Social media and E-cigarette use among US youth: Longitudinal evidence on the role of online advertisement exposure and risk perception

Summary: The study found that social media use is associated with increased e-cigarette use among U.S. youth through online e-cigarette advertisement exposure and subsequently decreased e-cigarette risk perception. The results highlight the importance of regulating online e-cigarette advertisement to prevent misinformation that may affect youth's perception of e-cigarettes and reduce their e-cigarette use.

Changes in Recall to E-Cigarette Advertisement Exposure among Florida Youth, 2016-2019

Summary: The study found that exposure to e-cigarette ads among youth in Florida decreased from 2016 to 2018, but rebounded in 2019. Factors associated with higher exposure to e-cigarette ads included the survey year of 2019, being in high school (compared to middle school), being female, current use of e-cigarettes, current use of other tobacco products, and having a family member who uses tobacco.

How secondhand smoke exposure affects tobacco use and smoking susceptibility of adolescents: Sex and school differences

Summary: The prevalence of secondhand smoke exposure among adolescents in China is high, with significant associations to increased smoking risk and susceptibility. Both home and public place exposure to secondhand smoke contribute to higher odds of current smoking and smoking susceptibility among adolescents, highlighting the importance of effective smoke-free strategies. Boys and junior school students are particularly vulnerable to SHS exposure at home, requiring targeted interventions for tobacco control.

Summary: The prevalence of electronic cigarette use among adolescents and young adults has increased significantly over the past decade. While associations between traditional cigarette use and mental health problems are well-established, the relationship between EC use and mental health comorbidities remains unclear. Existing literature suggests that youth EC use is linked to greater mental health issues, particularly among adolescents, but well-designed longitudinal studies are needed to explore the long-term mental health consequences of EC use.
