Deep Feature Enhancement Method for Land Cover With Irregular and Sparse Spatial Distribution Features: A Case Study on Open-Pit Mining

Gaodian Zhou et al.

Summary: Land cover classification in mining areas is crucial for environmental assessment and sustainable development. This study proposes a model called EG-UNet to enhance features of elements with few samples and capture long-range information. The model includes an edge feature enhancement module and a long-range information extraction module, which improves feature extraction and classification accuracy in mining areas.

Semi-Supervised Land Cover Classification of Remote Sensing Imagery Using CycleGAN and EfficientNet

Taehong Kwak et al.

Summary: This paper applies a semi-supervised learning-based CycleGAN and EfficientNet for VHR remote sensing image classification to overcome the limitation of requiring a large amount of labeled data. The proposed method achieved the highest accuracy among other benchmarks, especially in test areas with complex objects. Results also showed that a sufficient amount of unlabeled data is required to improve classification accuracy.

Land Use and Land Cover Mapping with VHR and Multi-Temporal Sentinel-2 Imagery

Suzanna Cuypers et al.

Summary: Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) mapping is the first step in monitoring urban sprawl and its impacts. This study utilizes very high-resolution (VHR) optical imagery to improve object recognition for GEOBIA LULC classification. The results show that adding a single VHR image improves the classification accuracy from 62.62% to 67.05%, and the inclusion of temporal analysis further improves it to 74.30%.

From Individual to Whole: Reducing Intra-class Variance by Feature Aggregation

Zhaoxiang Zhang et al.

Summary: The recording process of observation is influenced by multiple factors, leading to significant variance in image observation. The current visual recognition techniques only focus on inter-class separation, neglecting the intra-class compactness and limiting the model's applicability. To address this issue, we propose a feature aggregation method that effectively suppresses intra-class variance and achieves significant performance improvement in experiments.

On the Co-Selection of Vision Transformer Features and Images for Very High-Resolution Image Scene Classification

Souleyman Chaib et al.

Summary: Recent developments in remote sensing technology have led to the use of very high-resolution (VHR) images for observing the Earth. This paper proposes a new deep framework for VHR scene understanding by utilizing the strengths of Vision transformer (ViT) features. The framework includes feature extraction using pre-trained ViT models, merging of obtained features, and a new algorithm for feature- and image selection. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods.
