Inactivation of tomato WAT1 leads to reduced susceptibility to Clavibacter michiganensis through downregulation of bacterial virulence factors

Eleni Koseoglou et al.

Summary: Tomato bacterial canker caused by Clavibacter michiganensis is a destructive disease with no resistance identified. This study finds that tomato gene SlWAT1 is a susceptibility gene to the pathogen. Inactivation of SlWAT1 reduces susceptibility by affecting hormone content and bacterial virulence factor expression.

Redox-engineering enhances maize thermotolerance and grain yield in the field

Stuart A. Sprague et al.

Summary: Ectopic expression of glutaredoxin S17 from Arabidopsis thaliana (AtGRXS17) in maize enhances chaperone activity and gene expression associated with heat stress, providing thermotolerance. Thermotolerant maize lines showed increased protection against protein damage, resulting in a sixfold increase in grain production under heat stress conditions. These lines also exhibited thermotolerance in the reproductive stages, leading to improved pollen germination and fertilized ovules. The findings offer a robust and simple strategy for meeting rising yield demands in maize and potentially other crop species in a warming global environment.

Secretome Analysis of Clavibacter nebraskensis Strains Treated with Natural Xylem Sap In Vitro Predicts Involvement of Glycosyl Hydrolases and Proteases in Bacterial Aggressiveness

Atta Soliman et al.

Summary: The Gram-positive bacterium Clavibacter nebraskensis causes Goss's wilt and leaf blight on corn in the North American Central Plains, with varying degrees of aggressiveness among different strains. Highly aggressive strains of Cn produce more harmful proteins in the host xylem, leading to more severe symptoms and crop damage. This study identified differentially abundant proteins in the secretome of highly aggressive Cn strains in the host xylem sap, suggesting potential factors involved in Cn-host interactions.
